I still love that they spent literally 20 years refining this bizarrely literal take on an action-oriented version of JRPG menu combat, tabata and nomura exquisite corpsing the thing, to get to something that people agree is maybe the best yet but still may well be shy of good

the combat is wayyyyyyyy more ffxv than kingdom hearts (I can’t stand kingdom hearts combat, but ffxv is good clean arpg fun imo)

Pre-Advent Children, Dirge, etc. what happened at the end of FFVII was this spectacular, terse implication that, either humanity doesn’t make it long through Holy…or eventually gives way to nature massively reclaiming the planet (500 years later). After an age of detailed SNES endings (not least of all VI’s 25 mins of grandeur), I always thought it was too abrupt but didn’t mind the fatalist undertone. Not expecting they’ll keep that frame/ending over the course of the remake but Aerith’s death was an upfront aspect, leaning into it and part of VII’s “original soul”.

I’m sure they’re agonizing over the slow-motion work for the cutscene in which THE FUTURE IS CHANGED and cloud clashes swords with sephiroth in the exact moment of her erstwhile demise as we speak

get an aeris doll in there that you have to win at the gold saucer to substitute into the moment in time, tap square to withstand an electric torture rack, reference everything, ready player seven

branching path in which aeris learns to love and lets her hair down in the late game, leaving no one to pray for holy to stop the meteor, planet is doomed, final fantasy against sex

I want them to remake FFVI now. Do an entire opera for the opera scene. Just get crazy with it.

I think I was too young to understand what was going on in the plate collapse thing at first (Shinra destroys the Midgar slum quarter and kills most of Avalanche, your party’s eco-terrorist group trying to shut down the life-sucking Mako reactors) but this short cutscene with its synthesized scream and opera music playing overhead stuck with me more clearly than anything else in the game over ~20 years. I don’t think the remake would approach this as well as the original did.

Walmart told me in Feb that they didn’t have enough copies to cover preorder and I wouldn’t be getting mine on launch day. On launch day I was the only person in the pick-up spot to get a copy.

The new bike game was like something out of a Platinum game. Darts are fun too and the camera flourishes for mundane activities remind me of Yakuza. Oh yeah I guess there’s a combat system too.

One of the problems with 7 is that characters are functionally identical save for limits and equipment–you can tell they wanted to let you build anyone into any class with materia but it left the cast lacking mechanical identity. The way that different characters fill ATB and expend it solves that problem, it’s nice. The issue I found is that everyone has to do regular attacks to fill ATB which leads to things like Aerith doing as much damage with her staff as Cloud does with his sword. Also the paradox of melee fighters building ATB slowly against flying types in order to gain access to the skills to combat flying types.

A good few hours past the bombing mission and I feel like the writing/dialogue when not being too character hammy works a little charm, wading deeper into the sociopolitical tensions of Midgar’s classes, Shinra corp. Life in the big city. Not especially crafty, just more resonance trying to matching new resolution. A lot of it comes from better than your average buzz in the streets and slums, maybe too much if you can’t disable that ambient-dialogue window.

The (default) battle system is soft snap clicking with me. I expect a lot of folks are gonna remain frustrated with the constant interrupts to your chosen actions, getting juggled, etc. which echoes KH annoyances. Guard and Evade aren’t feeling that responsive…

Heavy scattering of lower grade assets used in the sector slums are like PS3 even 2 at times. Really evokes a range of disparity with those, upper platers big scenes and the next gen hi life.

Where’d all those faux Nomura-ed names and editions go? Because from just a few small insinuations…yeah I think there’s more chance for that kind of convolution than anyone expected.
