The first half of this video is 120% of the reason I bought the PSX anthology—it had to be higher than 100% to make up for the enormous penalties caused by PlayStation load times. It’s still pretty thrilling, like 19 years later, but on review, it only seems to hint at the ineffable quality that made FFVI so compelling to me. I’ve spent twenty minutes here just trying to quantify this, to define it by negation, to explain, and all I can do is shrug and gesture toward the intersection of qualities embodied by soundtrack and scenario, illustration and omission, and conclude with a big question mark, like so:

i’ve been reassured by Serious Final Fantasy 7 fans i trust that there’s a pretty good chance barret wont be an unbearable racist stereotype for the entire game which is the biggest thing putting a damper on the whole thing for me. i definitely appreciate how fucking weird this whole thing is and i’m curious about the rest of it

it’s theatrical

even operatic

i like final fantasy 6 a lot and it was profoundly important to me as a kid in a way that i think 7 is for a lot of other people. it is so wild to hear it talked about as a a kind of forgotten relic, i probably still think about it almost every day. but yeah i totally get that 7 made a much deeper impression in the culture. 6 will just always be the apex jrpg for me. even thinking about the opening sequence makes me very wistful. i do sort of wish it would get remade, but for me the ideal remake would have been in an alternate universe as a late psx game, still in 2d but with as much detail as like breath of fire 4. alas.

Well, that’s why you should refer to it by its proper name, Noom

UE4 doesn’t have nearly as many “tells” as UE3 or Unity at least

like there’s no obviously marking out a UE4 game for me, it just feels like “game efficiently produced at scale”

reminds me of the time when i was in high school and my friend’s younger brother initially thought Final Fantasy Tactics was called “Final Fantasy Fantastic”

we laughed, but i still think that’s a good name to this day
