The world needs more people to make videogames out of the weird ways they entertained themselves as kids.

amazed at how this game has been in development for so long that entire design trends in pixel art have blossomed and withered and come back round to being cool again just in time for what has to be an imminent release… right?

I’m hoping for something maybe like Lichdom: Battle Mage

They’ve made two.

Ah, but will anyone make a game based off of what I did as a kid? A game in which you click your teeth the moment a telephone pole passes the edge of your car window?

We’re working on the proper peripherals

eh, don’t worry about it, i thought about it and i guess i’m over it now and it’s funny looking back at it. he was a dick for sure, but it didn’t really impact me much and hopefully he’s grown since then

i just can’t bring myself to the level of outrage that some people are having over sifu

my initial response was “i don’t think chinese people would make a game about kung fu if given complete creative freedom, wish we would talk about how corporate consolidation of games has done more to stifle chinese representation in games than any random cultural appropriation thing”

i guess i just wish people were talking about anything other than cultural appropriation in videogames these days? feels very missing-forest-for-trees to me

Might be the worst GaaS mismatch yet

i do feel like what a lot of those people who complain about this stuff wanna see is more like Wholesomecore or prestige Annapurna bait in the vein of that Thirsty Suitors game or like the We Are OFK kind of shit which was announced recently. i’m not sure how actually representative that is of where anyone’s at esp outside of like particular upper middle class liberal-y Western enclaves. it certainly doesn’t seem to have much to do with most of the indie games i’ve seen from China. which i mean, i’m not an expert at of course but have tried to look into more in the past couple years (partially due to having taught a lot of students from China).

but anyway i think this is the problem with conversations about representation in media and the whole “representation matters” stuff i’ve seen many people i know in games push. they consistently ignore structural issues that are more difficult to disentangle/talk about and kind of just hope for some big hits to trickle down to more success and opportunity for a more diverse group of people. this usually doesn’t happen. i know in terms of queer/trans devs it just meant we have like Celeste or Dream Daddy or shit that is highly successful and visible by a trans or queer dev whereas most of the trans gamedevs i know are still broke as fuck and very much on the margins and don’t have much opportunity for going anywhere else.

i have some problems with how corpo-feeling the Game Devs of Color expo was when i went to it in 2019 but it’s hard to argue that at the very least, stuff like that hasn’t done a lot more to get some people exposure than some vaguely symbolic prestige-bait success.

besides, i just resent the idea that you’re supposed to get on the team of some random developer for having positive representation even if you don’t necessarily like the actual game itself, or the part of the landscape it exists within. it’s like none of this stuff has ever moved beyond a Anita Sarkeesian-level analysis or understand of media.

i think this is what i’m most frustrated by these days

i remember as goobergate was breaking out in 2015ish or so and i was still in that master’s program thinking about the way that various entities and people were handling it and wondering if i might have been hitching to the wrong wagon continuing in games but i reassured myself at the time thinking that The Industry would figure it out, that the discourse would progress between the time i was a student and me becoming somewhat tenured in the industry, because i was a hopeful babby game dev justifying my decision to do grad school

and somehow literally 7 years later we’re still talking about cultural appropriation and representation in games in almost the same way? and it’s basically the same people doing so? I managed to go through a whole reckoning re: my ethnic identity in relation to the Culture at Large in 7 years, so what gives, The Games Industry And Its Popular Discourse?

(although I guess I can’t say that much about it because I’m basically doing the same thing (grad school, again, in games, somehow) 7 years later too WHOOPS)

A designer who worked for Nintendo at one point has published a website with a bunch of free pixel art material to use.

I thought Chocobo Racing just had generic Final Fantasy classes monsters and summons but I guess this one has some specific picks as well!

A couple of the actors from Siren have been posting twitter shots of visiting the new studio by the Silent Hill 1-2/Siren dude.

So that’s cool.
