i beat the 9th labyrinth, im on my way to find that fucking unicorn
it wasnt too hard because i just did that ring quest and got like 3 fucking levels but i didnt get the conditional drop that gives me the strongest knife in the game THAT I REALLY WANNA GIVE MY MEGA POISONING NINJA NIGHTSEEKER but i think i have to wait like 3 or 5 or something days until it respawns
i was one turn off on my head bind, it wore off right before my last attack and he had a sliver of health left so even if dismissed my mirage and i shot him while everyone was defending and bound his head again hed die before the bind would took effect ARGH i suck at this game
iām finally playing etrian hd. some of the enemy upscales look bad (kuyutha in particular) but the updated skill screen is a huge help, and some of the new portraits are great. hereās my team
iāve in the past named the characters after myself and friends/partners which is usually FINE, unless something happens that makes seeing your friends name awkward which can kill a run.
so this time they are all made up.
olive and charlie are the stars of the team. they donāt shine yet but itās just a matter of time. olive is a klutz but sheāll become great at dealing out pain while probably apologizing profusely (she gives that impression). charlie is just happy to test his new drugs on his friends. emmy is :3
no defender because i want something more fun, so luciās in there to take on the buffing jobs (and being bad at it) but thatās ok cause sheāll bring the exp boost to help us pass the finish line. gotta figure out later whom to exchange for a ronin and hexer and hope iām not too attached to the whole team at that point. i just want to play with the probably complicated non-starter classes
i appreciate this game has less āmust havesā for party comp (despite my attempts, the postgame was quite impossible without both defender and medic in eo1), but on the other hand i did figure out one horrifying strat to end most postgame bosses on the first try, granted with the need of some luck
dark hunter and gunner basically guarantee some leeway where bosses donāt get to do anything for a good while, which if lucky is enough time for the hexer (who is brought on the verge of death) to fuck shit up. i think if i brought more axcelas, i could guarantee this without the need for luck as the rest of the party can keep gunner and dark hunter ready to unleash their force skills (foreskins), denying turns and redoing all binds
the dungeon also seems both a lot kinder + more tedious? but also you have these new-fangled checkpoints so you can just dive right into whichever youāve decided your current checkpoint is.
very surprised the postgame extra floors was not full of ganksquads who make sure to kill/turn to stone at least one ally
it feels somewhat inessential to the first game, unless like me, you desperately wanted dark hunter and hexer to matter. you can even put a ronin in your party and not regret it. you can hire a soft bear and let it be your material scavenger, iām sure that counts for something
oh! and i super appreciate that all the talkable npcās have at least one new line for every floor you reach. itās entirely superfluous but i like that. the talk command seems a bit silly in the previous game when thereās like, 7 people to talk to in the world and 5 of them say the same thing forever.
I stopped after clearing EO1 and then starting up EO2 and kinda fizzled out there after doing the quest where I have to stay in a room for like 3 days without leaving. I just wanna skip to EO3 and have fun but I know Iāll never go back and beat EO2 if I do that so I gotta muscle through it someday.
jaakko and marja are the backrow siblings which is why i gave 'em both finnish names.
if you can you must imagine them talking finnish with each other and heavily accented to everyone else. itās kinda embarassing that shurayuki is just named that cause i fucking love lady snowblood.
shurayuki and jaakko are generally in charge of wiping out random encounters, while marja keeps them asleep to avoid any counter-attacks. olive is situational for when binds are important, and otherwise just a decent physical damage dealer. maggie the war magus could potentially do a lot of different stuff, especially alongside a hexer, but i mostly put her on healing/tp battery duty.
it really is amazing how well a hexer can carry any party in eo2. iād call it obscene and maybe even be mad that becoming āessentialā was just handed from one class to another, but i love hexers. i love putting curses that actually work on enemies. i love the sadomasochist ability to double your own pain back at anything you look at. fuck elemental damage, we turn intestines to sludge with words. let me curse the world with you girl <3
edit: if a hexer asks to talk things out you should run
Shoot, that reminds me that it really is weird to play the older EOs without dual classing. The Untold games added it in so I was confused playing the original games lol
Oh shoot, I remembered wrong. Looking it up, EOU1/2 had Grimoires Stones which were items you could equip that gave class skills. More versatile than subclassing: Grimoire Stone | Etrian Odyssey Wiki | Fandom
i should get back into my EO2 playthrough! i exported my guild data from 1 (which gives you some extra dialogue and a so-so bonus accessory (slightly nicer if you beat 6th stratum + got a 100% save)) and was roleplaying the Ronin and Hexer from my first game moving to Lagaard to start another chapter of the UNICORNS, but fell off cuz playing 2 of these games back to back while also playing thru Wizardry is a good way to burn yourself out on blobbers
it was kinda fun to crowbar a Ronin & Hexer into my EO1 party even though they basically just made me less efficient, would be nice to play a game where theyāre actually good
oh wait im also in the middle of like 3 other long games right now lol. ah well the void isnāt gonna stave itself off
i like taking a āmaleā portrait in eo and saying āyouāre a girl nowā
this party has yet to prove itself and we have insane difficulties with the first floor.
for one, i think i overestimated how convenient the healing of a sovereign could be. but hey, iām sure this is gonna matter less later on.
the idea is that teal is the darling princess who cheers everyone on.
helmiās here to flex and bash.
gudrun gets items and gives minor support until that stops being viable at all. everybodyās grandma but is nicest to teal.
olga is the generic elemental attacker but also evil as hell. helmi and marcie kind of have to keep her in check.
marcie is a very much a big sis, also the ranged support from the backrow and will probably be one of the team wipers eventually
I played this one year ago and used the same party composition except with a hoplite instead of a gladiator. I reached the post-game. Youāll probably be fine
hehe same, i played through a good amount of EO5 with this āmaleā masurao named after meeee (and given a girl voice cuz 5 and Nexus wisely decouple voices from portraits)
