I picked up playing Etrian Odyssey Nexus again - I never finished it but the desire to play an Etrian is always lurking in the back of my mind, an insatiable itch to dungeon crawl, make custom characters, cheese out some FOEs while listening to bangin Yuzo Koshiro tunes.
So let’s talk about EO! What’s your fav? Your favorite track? Fav class? Character art? FOE? Dungeon? Tell me what you thinkkkk
The original had a nice pixel font, but I guess the later 3DS games had a basic san serif, but it looks more custom than whatever default font they’re using for the new Remaster:
EOV
Fav EO is EOU2 bc of the charming restaurant subgame and how it uses monster parts as cooking materials. Also using Streetpass to invite other players’ parties as guests, is so dang charming
Fav track is: love all of the battle tracks, hard to pick one. The chilling at home town themes are also great too. Really love EOU2’s restaurant theme:
Think it’s such a cool and very Etrian-take on the classic Dragon Quest hero design. I especially love how it took until the series finale (sorta) for them to even think about bringing in a traditional hero and then they made it play around projecting afterimages instead of basic magic and swordplay. Love it
I still haven’t played any of the Etrian Mystery Dungeons bc I don’t care for Mystery Dungeon games much, but I probably will just bc I love Etrian so much and I’m going to run out of games that I haven’t played in the series yet.
This series would be real good with free/cheap respecs or less stingy skill points, I’ve become kind of a EO hater because these games just can’t let you experiment without massive grinding and I always end up with a dull team of one trick ponies that do the same action every battle. Please just let me pay 100 gold to remove my 2 points in Wide Slash and put them into Bind Head
I’ve still played through EO1 to 4 since exploration was too strong!
3’s the favorite because of the enormous boat side-game and nautical theme!!
I’ve played all of these but always fall off around the 3rd or 4th stratum, never beat one. Agreed on the idea of needing like a farmer second party or whatever never sits right with me, find that too tedious. But man I could just hang out in the world with that music forever.
I’ve finished THREE of these and now I’m charging my 3ds so I can fucking finish nexus
I am shameless and rely on a guide the SECOND I get stuck on a map. I like figuring out the fights but if they put a sokoban puzzle or a sliding ice puzzle or a river traversal puzzle I’m not doing it. I’m not using my brain, I’m looking that shit up and having a blast mapping it
I feel like most people on this site are good at games and I want everyone to know I am not. I always have gamefaqs open, and it makes my EO experience better
I can’t rememeber if I posted here when i was first playing nexus and I tried to look up the artists twitter to see what he’s been up to and the whole twitter was promotional imagery for his new manga about taking a toddlers temperature anally
but boy howdy I love drawing those dungeons
also I have to load up nexus because I’ve never played a JP etrian odyssey but I’ve seen the JP REMASTER odyssey font multiple times so now I have to see how accurate those pics were
oh yah I made an axe nexus thread so I should bring it back if I’m playing again
So I’m playing Nexus on both real hardware and emulator, just transferring the save file back and forth whenever I want to play portably vs on tv, but one thing I did when playing on emu is get all the DLC and I didn’t know there were quests that just give you like 5000 bucks and like 60000 exp free. I’d recommend getting the EXP DLC if you hate grinding, makes stuff super easy
Quietly those two changes alleviate the grinding people are complaining about, without tuning the stats down at all. If you feel the ever feel the need to grind, you can instead go “downstairs”, or learn enemy weaknesses to beat them without brute force, or learn enemy weaknesses to grind hyper-efficiently.
There’s other additional content in it like a story mode and orchestral music but I don’t like those, but it’s fine because both of those can be turned off.
Yeah for some reason I did not vibe with EOU1’s plot and played it in Classic Mode only but meanwhile I love the characters in EOU2 and didn’t touch the Classic Mode in it. Does EOU2 Classic also include the restaurant? I wonder how they’d tie it in.
I looked for other games in this microgenre last month but they’re literally all on 3DS and Vita? And much as I crave to play one of these again, I just can’t seriously imagine dusting one of those off and playing a 40-hour RPG on its tiny, washed-out screen.
Been thinking of setting up an emulator and finding somewhere to download ROMs but I’d have to do a lot of research for that too (especially since I’d like to play the original Japanese versions for practice)
My favorite character class is Beast, just look at this character art
I went with the brown bear and gave him the limit break that quadruples his health, had a bard increase his defense and give him regen, and made him use the ability to direct all attacks towards himself. So basically I had this gigantic wall of bear standing in front of my party while my glass cannon mages blasted the boss from the back
My favorite music is the EO2 regular battle theme. Very normie choice but it’s normie for a reason
My least favorite music is Adventurer’s Guild. The problem is I feel like I spent hours listening to that overly upbeat martial tune while doing detailed research about every character class and their potential synergies with each other. Fine tune for what it’s going for, but not designed to be listened to for as continuously as I ended up
