Etrian Odyssey is the best!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah, the DLC is still up on the eShop for purchase or you can download the DLC cia (I think?) file and have Citra patch it to the game file to use on emu.

In my case, I bought some Nexus DLC (the bikini armor for the hero, of course) and then when I transferred my save file to emulator, I couldn’t get the DLC file to patch right or have the game recognize it, so instead I switched to the European version of the game and European DLC, which worked totally fine with the US save file.

oh man ill just get it legit how novel i thought the eshop died!!!

Still around until the end of the month, I think. You can only transfer money to it via the website or switch or something though? Something dumb like that

Oh yeah, looking it up, you have to link your 3DS account to the general Nintendo account to put money into it and buy stuff.

OK it actually only took 20 minutes

There’s some weird distortion in the audio though, got any emulator tips to fix that? I’m on Citra nightly

Ooh that looks great! Jealous you can reorient your monitor for optimal 3DS layout.

If the sound is a little spotty, try lowering the internal graphics resolution? I’m not too sure what the optimal settings are so I’m running at like 2x original resolution with one of the bottom rendering filter things.

Switching the audio engine to sdl2 and turning off audio stretching seemed to fix it

Stuck on the character creator for too long as usual. Trying all the voice modes to figure out which ones fit the portrait and aren’t too annoying. Voice 59 is nothing but overblown slogans like “The enemy will feel my strength!” and “The revolutionary moment… has arrived!” and it’s labeled “Chuunibyou

Switch got Potato Flowers in Full Bloom,
Undernauts (both great) and Labyrinth of Galleria which just got released (NIS game but it looks fairly meaty)

I’m actually going through Potato Flowers in Full Bloom right now and it’s pretty good!

The 2010 indie game version of Etrian Odyssey, with

  • simplified but more pertinent skill trees
  • (presumably) a shorter length
  • all enemies on the map (no random battles) and immobile so you can pick up your fights
  • full HP healing after every battle
  • dioramas everywhere…
  • lower stakes (finding potato seeds instead of saving the world)
  • decorative items to decorate your room
  • « now let’s stop fighting rats for a moment and talk about trade unions on the peninsula »

I never heard of this game until now and I’m so charmed by it! Here’s the review I watched:

I’m definitely picking this up later.

Also the entire time I thought it was a western indie game until I looked up a trailer for the game and found out it was Japanese. I was thinking the characters and girls were too cute, makes sense

Thanks for the rec, Tuxedo!

Boy, the first floor in Nexus is a bit of an asskicker isn’t it. I keep getting my front row nightseeker one-shot from full HP by random encounters. More like deathseeker amirite

Also I’m completely broke, all my money is going to inns and potions instead of equipment. I have to go back to town whenever someone dies because forget about using one of my 2 phoenix downs for convenience. It’s a diff dynamic than other EOs I’ve played because there’s no farming spots to get easy money from.

I think I’ll swap my nightseeker for a Landsknecht. Gamefaqs forum professionals advise that nightseeker is a ridiculous late game carry class, and separately that the difficulty curve gets easier over time in Nexus. What I’m hearing is by the time it finally gets good, I won’t need it anymore

I’m a bit confused by the pace of Nexus too. There’s so many small labyrinths and I’m not sure which ones are “plot essential.” Like I was spending so long trying to beat the Golem FOE, and then it turns out I didn’t need to at all and could’ve just gone down the level next to it?

Though maybe that was explained a while ago and I just forgot it on account of it being years since I last played.

MISTOVER by disbanded Korean studio KRAFTON is a Darkest Dungeon like by way of Etrian Oddessy with overhead Mystery Dungeon navigation.

The combat economy is a little wonky which they tried to mitigate with later life tuning and player facing toggles but I’m not certain they ever hit a sweet spot. These are challenging systems to get just right !

Regardless I really enjoy the look and feel of the game in play, lot of neat little ideas. I know paperdoll animation is mostly derided but MISTOVER’s principal artist Tako Ashin is a Vanillaware true believer and I’m into it

I’ve been playing Galleria this week and there’s a ton there. The story is…meh N1, but the exploration and the ridiculousness of the party composition (eventually you can have 40 people in your party) is pretty fun. There’s all sorts of fun mechanics to mess with in the dungeon; the first you get is smashing walls. The previous game in the series (Labyrinth of Refrain) is also available, but I didn’t get as hooked there as I did with Galleria.

Undernauts is really cool, just for strange horror game aesthetics. Completely different style of dungeon design as well. At least one other game from that developer in the dungeon genre is there as well (Savior of Sword City or something like that).

The Lost Child is another one on Switch that somehow takes place in the same universe as El Shaddai, but doesn’t seem too interesting otherwise.

The Mary Skelter games are technically dungeon games, but also look gross and I’ve heard are super gross, so I never looked further.

for nexus I just went by the bounties I was getting. like if one was too hard I’d try another one and just do that til I got levels beat. my nightseeker was back row AS fuck I would not put that piece of paper in the front row

protag is hero/landschneckt

sidekick is shogun/highlander

support is gunner medic

thematic synergy char is harbinger/farmer

and the mary sue for my dead best friend is nightseeker /ninja

NOW TO REMEMBER WHAT THE FUCK I WAS DOING

I meant to post about Potato Flowers in Full Bloom when it came out but I never did and I can’t remember exactly what I thought of it but it was pretty cool though I dunno how I feel about the fights having like no random elements, they’re pretty puzzle-y, and I recall feeling like I couldn’t win some battles without changing out my party. But I also may be wrong about that, I don’t wholly trust my memory on this, also maybe they patched it since then! Game was cool though, my party members had really gross names, they were bad ass even though some people out there didn’t appreciate their filth.

I probably post this every time this comes up but half the characters in DDD are named after old Etrian Odyssey party members.

I needed cash to buy potions for the first boss, so I recruited 40 Heroes all named “ほ” and sold their starting equipment

Imagine being excited to join a new guild but then your new boss renames you Ho, steals the shirt off your back and then sells it for nickels and then kicks you out :pensive:

Daph Albee (wow autocorrect), gimme your team’s QR code! I gotta generate mine the next time I play but I’m only barely lv 30 now.

Oh yeah and the translation is wonderfully stilted when it starts mentioning politics. I think. IDK English isn’t my native language but this is weird right?

God
My team is Knight/Rogue/Sorceror and in general, Knight protects, Rogue deals damage in short fights and sorceror in deals damage in long fights. But the sorceror almost only has fire damage, so each time a boss resists fire I’m fucking screwed

One guy did post a guide on steam about soloing the entire game with a sorceror (+three other classes) so I guess we are all bad at this game

One good thing this game has over EO is that XP scales with level difference so you can have a new unit catch up very fast. But IMO it’s already too much effort to go back to the guild and make another character and pick the perfect name and haircut for them and put some more skill points into a few skill trees, I’d rather struggle to win that fight on the fourth try with the bad team instead. Right? Please EO take note, don’t make me lose 2 whole levels for a respec, just the mental fortitude needed to do a respec in the first place is almost too much

Also. Just when I thought I had seen most of what Potato Flowers had to offer I got rewarded with great new sights
