Elden Ring (Part 1)

Most of the underground areas are connected to optional questlines that kick off after you’ve finished Liurnia and Caelid but before you need to enter the capital on the plateau. You can mess around down there earlier and run away from stuff though! I probably did it all between lv40 and 70

Also I’m not exaggerating about “infinitely far away”—I tried to explore nearby cliffs to find a way around (no luck, you have to go directly through the firing line of three infallible magic archers and like ten tanky guys in a big pile) and I got hit and killed by a magic arrow from a speck in the distance. If they’re loaded in they can kill you.

This isn’t an underground area—it’s just horrible slaughter gauntlet in northeast liurnia you seemingly have to pass through if you want to access the rest of the map at all

oh sorry I was thinking of a very similarly named area. Um, you can skip that place too! Go to southeast Caelid.

finally look kinda cool after 25 hours

honestly at a bit of a loss for what to do at this point to progress ‘the main quest’ and open up some more of the world map…

I haven’t been here in days because I’ve just been playing elden ring after work every day like it’s a second job or something. I am REALLY enjoying it. I’m not leveling very efficiently because I’m dumping a huge amount of runes into Smithing Stones, but now I’m using a level 11 scimitar, a very upgraded spell staff from the diggers in the crystal mines, the Black Key crossbow, and the Meteoric Ore Blade, and I’m enough of a jack of all trades to handle most stuff the game throws at me. I’ve been going after a lot of bosses with summoned buddies but I’m regularly able to handle stuff like the Dragonkin Soldier of Nokstella solo so I’m feeling pretty good about where I am, haha.

Just got up onto the plateau through the cave system. I keep coming to progress through here because I’m having a hard time with the Festival of Combat in Caelid, haha. That boss rules but I’m a little squishy because I try to keep a medium load all the time and I rebirthed myself to more carefully focus my stats on strength/dex/int, and now I can’t carry as much armor on me at once, haha. I need to just spend some time leveling.

If I’m mostly in Caelid, Liurnia, and Limgrave, where’s the best place for me to be farming runes? Or will I just get more runes total if I press up onto the Plateau? I’ve skipped a small but not insignificant number of bosses, but I’m finding that the vast majority of bosses in these regions don’t give me enough runes to even level up one time anymore (I think my levels now cost around 19000).

An easy way to get runes is to warp to the Impassable Bridge bonfire and walk over to the battle between humanoids and doglike creatures. I did that a few times, helping the monsters out a little because they tend to lose. When most or all are dead, repeat.

My levels cost only about 6000, though. Might be too tedious later on.

I also got a lot of my current armor set this way, with the exception of the cow horns I like to wear.

IMO at this point you should push to get inside the Capital. You’ll have to defeat more bosses to get there, but you’re correctly leveled for them, and there is way better rune farming inside there than anywhere in the overworld

sweet. Tonight I’ll finish up the tournament in caelid and head up there!

Actually, before that, I noticed you also said your weapon is +11. On the Plateau you have access to mines to upgrade it to +15, do that first. That will make a way bigger difference than additional soul levels. The plateau is pretty big so maybe a good plan for the night is just to explore it and find everything

Awesome. I feel crappy about still so frequently using my starter weapon but it’s very strong, haha. Only my meteoric ore blade is stronger but it’s actually still lower level and much slower to upgrade now that I’ve surpassed what Iji is able to give me.

I still have not gone to the capital at like 40 hours and level 75 because I found the underground stuff so compelling. I got the bonfire right outside at last! but it seems like you can pretty much put it off until you’ve done 75% of everything else in the world

yeah i’d been using a brass shield with very similar stats but twice the weight

i also love the underground stuff but I’m not quite sure where to go next after the dragonkin warrior. I’ve taken to examining the map at extreme closeup looking for additional elevators. There’s a plateau in Liurnia above the albinauric village that I suspect may contain one, but I haven’t yet figured out how to get up there! Need to do some more hunting, haha.
