Elden Ring (Part 1)

it was a pain to scroll through for the actual interview snippets, yeah

I feel like this game is going to take me 200 hours to beat. I’m 40 in and I’ve only killed one major boss. I haven’t even found the key to enter the academy yet. I’ve been using the golden halberd, but I got a new faith/strength weapon today that I’m trying out too. It’s a dragon sword with a leaping fire attack that’s kinda neat.

Elden Ring would be a lot better if the ā€œPotion Sellerā€ guy was in charge of world building.

This happened to me and it was delicious. It actually made me worry that the game had peaked too early.

can’t wait

Preceptor Miriam is not only the worst FromSoft fight but also perhaps the worst thing in any game, digital or analogue, in all of time

My actual secret desire would be a collaboration with M John Harrison.

I definitely noped out of that one.

imo there’s never any shame in running past a bullshit encounter in a souls game

I’m really impressed by how challenging they made the humanoid encounter design in this one – even when you feel very powerful and can take down very large bosses, they make sure to remind you that four guys placed the right way can fuck you up.

anyway you don’t need to beat Miriam until much later in the darkmoon greatsword questline

While I don’t know who or what Miriam is I do know that this has been said of 50% of demons souls

I incorrectly assumed I’d get a key item from Miriam, so I kept going back to her every few hours. I mostly won by pumping vigor. I’m not sure if people have already discussed ā€œtips,ā€ but I noticed a couple of things.

  1. Her ghost adds are triggered by your location, not her. So run past her and kill them on every floor first.

  2. Her last phase is beyond obnoxious for melee because she’s almost never in range. Occasionally she’ll teleport into a wall just ahead of herself and you can get some hits in then, or you can just use a bunch of throwing knives or arrows instead. She doesn’t dodge them well.

RE: Bosses. The only thing I’m annoyed with so far is how many ankles I’m targeting. It’s going to be real satisfying when I respec into someone that can throw lightning bolts or rocks.

I also thought this! then, after losing for 30 minutes, and noticing that, yes, she literally just trolls you, I decided to look it up to make sure I wasn’t completely wasting my time. I was! but that actually made me happy, because it meant I could leave.

JSYK because I’m 80 hours+ in and just learned this, even if you’ve used a remembrance it can still be duplicated if you go to the right area (got my 70+ powerful moon spell AND my 60INT+ sceptre)

logged on to twitter to do something and saw people doing the ā€œmissable tutorial is badā€ ā€œno it’s actually really goodā€ argument and just fucking noped out of there

i was annoyed at it but also it’s kind of funny? the only thing i learned from it was the guard counter thing anyway

god now i’m doing it

Performance issues seem to gradually be improving with each additional proton/elden ring patch. This game kind of reminds me of Bloodborne in that its an attempt to do something slightly different with the Dark Souls formula and not all the edges make sense. In Dark Souls its often the case that when you run up against an apparently impossible boss the clear message is ā€œYou can do this if you practice enough.ā€ Whereas here the alternative of just grinding more is much more obvious to the player, since they can always go exploring. It sort of breaks the fundamental idea of the Dark Souls boss encounter, in a way.

Dark Souls will punish you with boredom if you want to grind more to beat a boss, but here it will reward you with content for doing so. This kind of unbalances the experience.

Also, it occurs to me that Leaden Ring is a much better name for a Souls Game.

radragon’s soreseal rips

really that whole awful building you find it in is great – best place to grind out a few thousand souls if you’re close to leveling up, you get a nice medallion half, you get the soreseal. only nice building in that part of the world

  • i found the berserk doggie again and he has friends
  • almost killed a purple drink dragon but it noped out during the fight, hmm

Are the Uld Palace Ruins (northeast liurna) a super late game area or something? The big orc guys there keep completely ethering me—they can’t be stunned or staggered during their super long combos, there’s like four of them in any given zone and there are archers who kill me in two hits who can shoot arrows from literally infinitely far away with perfect deflection shooting.

Honestly, I’m starting to really hate this game. I had an absolute blast my first like… 20-30 hours or so but now literally everything shoots and teleports, I have no health, I gain levels outrageously slowly, my weapons seem to do basically no damage to anyone and I just feel stuck.
