there is a certain enemy in a fairly findable but objectively obscure secret area that might be the most slapstick thing they’ve done yet. cracked myself up every time it killed me
also I really cannot get over having put like six hours a day into this for six days straight, something I don’t think a video game has made me do in about 20 years, and being in the position of having to slow down only because I can’t do that for two weeks in a row, not because I’m not compelled to.
like I’ve always, always found the impulse to call something the best ever to be incredibly facile and unserious, and sure, after all, this is still a fairly inaccessible single player RPG that has a handful of obvious flaws, nothing is perfect or wholly representative, b u t… no one else is on this level? they could’ve shipped half of this and it would have still been industry-leading by miles and miles. impossible to oversell it.
ok well that’s 5 bosses down that dropped great souls / remembrances / whatever they’re called in this one, I have no idea which of those were necessarily optional but I think at least 2
radahn (the one I’m most uncertain about being optional) was the hardest by far
also, you know how both @Decinoge and I kept observing that this felt at various times like Demon’s, Dark 2, Dark 3, Bloodborne, and Sekiro, but never quite like the first Dark Souls? I am pleased to report that one of the big secret-ish questlines feels extremely like the first Dark Souls, Artorias of the Abyss in particular.
oh my god this rennala fight, they still remember how to make fun bosses that aren’t just brutal pattern drills. this is a demons souls boss i love it
I was fighting Morgott in 3-player coop, and when he did his big skewer attack, he lifted up two of us on the front and back ends of his sword like some kind of Tarnished kebab
i’ve also seen a dungeon wall spattered with electric blue streaks from a dragon breathing magic flame above
Ok I didn’t understand how ashes work but after 160 hours now I do and holy shit how did this game get better
I can’t imagine how much I’d hate this game if it had a quest log
I’ve played through Stormveil castle offline and I think my experience was better for it, discovering the ways to
navigate without having messages everywhere.
Then again, I logged in at a certain point to make a specific MGS3 joke message and found out somebody else had also thought of that and left the exact same message I was gonna write, so who is to say whether the online is good or bad
FROM when will you embrace doom metal in one of your games already?
how sick was it when I was just working my way up to this spot and passed by a church and as the sky turned hell red an even hell redder nun with a giant ass blade came at me fast as murder?
pretty sick!
Probably close to 20 hours in and just had my first instance of an NPC actually marking the thing they were talking about on my map and I was so used to cryptic directions and finger pointing that it actually felt significant
Like they were the first person Id met who actually carried a pen on them
… like tears in rain…
i don’t really have much to say or express about this game that hasn’t been said, but it’s definitely overtaken all other games i was playing. i don’t think that this will be my favorite Souls-ish title that From has made, but it might be, and at the very least, i think it’s the most playable of all of them. the ability to just screw off and go somewhere else when you hit a roadblock or a frustration point is such a great addition to the formula.
ran into a huge dragon by accident last night while i was exploring and died in one hit. that was fun.
Is there anywhere I can find a good shield for blocking magic? The guys who wear big stone masks of the character of the king from Burger King are kicking my ass at Ray Liota Academy or whatever it’s called
if you have any investment in int or faith, either scholars shield (12 int) or magic fortification (10 faith) will help tremendously thru there
There’s a Spelldrake Talisman +1 in a treasure chest behind one of the magic seals in Sellia. (If you don’t know how to open those, Gowry provides a hint paper if you talk to him after beating the red swamp Commander boss.)
Though personally I did the entire magic academy while wrongly assuming that talisman improved magic offense not defense, so I didn’t equip it lol
all of the place names are super unmemorable and i’m constantly mixing them up with each other.
Caelid, Caelem, Caria, Lucaria, Liurnia, Siofra, Sellia
People names too. Margit? Morgott? Marika?
Japanese RPGs end up with unmemorable names when instead of taking inspiration from European names in real life, they just string random katakana together. I’m not sure if they started resorting to that for a higher proportion of names in Elden Ring, or it’s more bothersome purely because there are more places and people to tell apart
I’m in atlus plateau now. still haven’t triggered the radahn fight. i don’t know where to find the pot guy or whatever else i need to do to start the festival so fucking whatever. i hate this game
