I’m playing a mage who’s trying to max magic damage and thought it’d be a good idea to switch from INT to Mind after 60 because the number increased at the same rate ignoring the table said DEFENSE not OFFENSE
~I would like to discuss lore implications~
huge spoilers if you have not yet gotten the moonlight greatsword, do not read:
so, since Ranni pretty much admits outright when you begin her questline that she was responsible for the initial sundering (which I think is a phenomenal narrative choice for the record) but can barely bring herself to remember it, and you eventually wind up seeing the slain fingers, the ruins of the lunar estate, and increasingly many icons of her as a small child…
I assume that the lunar estate was at one time where she and some adult mages lived and drew jointly on the power of the moon and of the void (they’re both loosely implicated in both this game and in overarching souls mysticism) in order to give the power of magic to Raya Lucaria. I assume that Ranni herself committed the unspeakable original sin as a child when she was, basically, wanting to test her powers and not appreciating the consequences, and spent the subsequent hundreds of years putting the mistake behind her and growing in power all the same in a world she could no longer help or harm in remote proportion to what she’d already done. the assassin’s cult whose black mark kicks off the quest and who were said to have been responsible for killing Marika probably simply grew up around her legend as it was twisted over time and wound up being ascribed credit for an act she no longer cared to dwell on.
the location of the lunar estate itself is interesting as it seems to be the closest point directly between the depths and the void and the moon, and it’s interesting that it seems to be basically the same location as the village of the albinaurics, whose self-inflicted destruction happened as far as I can tell generations later, when they probably rediscovered or misunderstood some amount of this history and attempted to harness it for themselves.
likewise, the underground river citadels seem to pre-date all of this to the point where they might as well have been built in lordran or something – I think the game is showing us three separate layers of rising and falling civilizations here.
these 2 aren’t an accident I think
and for the record, in re all of this, this game is like an automatic entry into the pantheon of “I can’t believe they’re just out here making the best possible version of these things like it’s not some lost art” along with disco elysium, outer wilds, dragon quest 11
i wish they would just put a dialog/chat log, like some other games, so i can re-read what they said. i find myself forgetting the proper noun soup ramblings, like, instantly.
he he
he he
Maybe not exactly a log, IMO thats a bit too straightforward for one of these games, but it would be nice to have a little more power in marking your own map, even something like the templated message system for adding notes on markers would go a long way
I’d even accept a tiny indicator in the corner of screen telling me the latitude and longitude of my current cursor position. That way I could index my own note textfile properly
on seeing that faith has a bleed weapon buff that stacks with a weapon’s existing bleed yeah i’m gonna get some faith
got george michael in my head now
too bad they don’t have those JEANS in this game
Why isn’t there a question mark map marker!!
- i’ve been using the little castle fort symbol to mean ‘there is a door/passage of some kind here that i need to figure out’ because castles…have doors?
- i’ve been using the skull to mark which of the evergaols i’ve found that i’ve completed, which is all of them, die criminals
I was scared to enter the evergaols because it sounds like there’d be some kind of ancient evil sealed in there, but turns out it’s just some regular criminals with like a bit of extra bleed effect on their sword. Why bother with that elaborate magic seal system
I’m still maining the weapon I got from the very first evergaol I encountered at like level 12, I have it up to +9 (somber) and it does almost 600 damage with a faith buff
i got the Berserk Dog from the Loading Screens to help me kill one of the criminals, but I haven’t seen him since
Is that the Bloodhound’s Fang? I meet the requirements for that and I think it’s upgraded by the other kind of smithing stone, so I was considering switching to it.
yup. I looooooove curved greatswords (burial blade in boobarn, dragon’s thing in DkS2) and I was delighted to get a decent one so early on in this.
it’s probably not the best-best weapon but it sure seems good enough
I’ve been using the “beast” marker to note locations with the giant glowing pawmarks. I have no idea what those are or how to interact with them, but I imagine I might want to go back and systematically “do” them later
I forgot what I was using to mark what! What do trees mean today? Al I know but it sure ain’t trees!!
Yesterday I called Torrent “the car”, I hope I’m just real sleep deprived and ring addled, I hope there isn’t anything seriously wrong with my brains
