Elden Ring (Part 1)

ended up at the northeastern tip of whatever the horrible dragon hell lands are called. there was a mysterious gate near a church and i touched it, and it teleported me to a castle with a grace inside! also past a TERRIFYINGLY HUGE RAVEN ENEMY that i snuck past on my way out

since it did this i also got the dectus halves early. i’m only level 15 and everything here one-shots me but i’m having fun exploring and filling out my map with markers. exploring while vastly under-level is one of my favorite RPG experiences, games need to be more willing to let you get in over your head

beat miriam in a proper wizard’s duel but the secrets of the study hall remain hidden.

i also got the decaton halves but i still gotta find where to use them. the description is just vague enough that i still have no idea where it is. all the more reason to comb liurnia

love when you approach one of the ravens from behind and they suddenly swing around

Oh my god I didn’t even realize the hug gives you a debuff. Peak FromSoft

Finally met Godrick (does that need a spoiler tag? He’s in the trailer). Did not beat him but got to like 25% health in the first try. Seems easier than Margit so far, but I might take a break to do some more exploring. Still weird there’s this insanely hard dungeon that you get directed to right off the bat when there’s also so much other stuff to look at

damn!

I have just been getting completely dicked on anywhere I go. I die in two hits to anything in the game? I feel like halberd is god awful in this game, but I’ve kinda been locked into it. I’m not dex, and every other weapon I’ve found is a dex weapon except some giant hammer I can’t use yet. so my halberd is +5, every enemy feels like they just ignore the damn thing. have you tried killing those fucking birds in stormveil with a halberd? it doesn’t work. at all.

Well, it’s not boring, and I don’t dislike it.
But a tad too… Straight forward in most places?

Apart from Ashina castle, most places are just a straight path, hardly even a dungeon.
Still I don’t want to be misunderstood and having people saying I don’t like it.

The game wasn’t boring and flaws in exploration were compensation with action and overall gameplay narrative rythm.
In fact, from all game systems Sekiro was the one that clicked most with my personal preferences. It was the hardest and most unforgiving learning curve I had in any game ever (even more than Faxanadu) but damn I like how I feel playing that game.

But my sweet spot for exploration is a more metroidvania kind of thing, which DS1 was the best example. Maybe DS2 DLCs if you take each as a singular thing and not as one big dungeon each.
Still I can’t remember anyone mentioning that in DS1 after Anor Londo, the 4 great souls and kinda straight forward paths, and definitely the simplest parts of the game without any forward connection to the main nexus. It only took advantage of the recently won teleport system (one could argue rather metroidvania, skill opens path but…)

Not unhappy at all with Elden Ring. And I’ll say it again that FromSoft did this right.
They are also very good engineers, and I like to argue that their games fight system is a well engineered Zelda (roll dodge, block, weapon attack… Add customization and possibilities open).

But from N64 Zelda forward the games… Kinda seriously bore me. Elden Ring doesn’t and like I said previously this exploration feels more like a Shadow of the Colossus. This tip of disapointment is really just that. A very small piece that is overwhelmed by how well it is designed.

However I can ignore it and feel again that a big part of FromSoft’s games uniqueness was lost there.

Most weapons are actually ā€œlow qualityā€ (as in quality build but dont scale too well).

The War Ashes will mostly define the scaling of the weapon. Focus on health and stamina until you have some comfortable 20 points in each. Weapon scaling also won’t matter much until you give it at the very least +3 and, have a War Ash in it, and have your str at 20 as well.

You have plenty of opportunities to level, and very low difficulty mini-bosses around. Search cliff faces for entries, or those ā€œhollow with a crown and cloakā€ tall statues to find those easy dungeons.

To go str, maybe a greatsword will do?
There is one on a chest at the camp just next to the grace you get the horse. You see those 2 huge carriages? They have a chest each, search the back of it. There is also another carriage being dragged by 2 giants (trolls it seems) south of that camp, past a decent sized bridge.

Those mean sweet loot. Get it.

The merchant at the Roundtable has all of the basic starting weapons for sale. But it might be hard to scrounge up another twelve smithing stone [1]s anytime soon, unless you look up their locations on the wiki.

I’ve literally had the hug debuff for 20 hours at least and I don’t know what it will be like to not have it. But I’m happy to find out.

The halberd is actually my exclusive bird-killing weapon. Stand your ground and stab stab stab and poof, dead bird. Same method is hilariously effective on CPU black phantoms, too. It’s also great for horseback battles.

hell no, I got enough strength to finally use my hammer and it is so much better at bird killing than the halberd.

so yeah I just decided to leave stormveil castle and find something else. apparently the whole place to the south is lower level than stormveil, so I’ve been wandering around down there doing random things. also I found an anchor! as much as I want to cosplay may from guilty gear in my dark souls, it’s the same weapon as the hammer I’ve already got at +5 now. unlucky.

my build is so jank. I want to go strength faith, but leveling is pretty slow in this game. so I have to get a decent base level in endurance and vigor, then I wanted 13 int for sacred blade whatever weapon spell. then you need some points in mind so you can actually use your abilities, and then I needed some baseline dex to equip things. before you know it I’ve got an everything build. I’m sure it’ll come around in another twenty hours.

Finally found a ā€˜hat’ and now my character is complete. It actually lowers all your defense stats but the look is too perfect to take it off
