Elden Ring (Part 1)

I think you just use the blessing she gives you and it goes away

Runs perfectly on ps4 slim, literally the only downside Ive experienced is kind of long load times. No stutter and none of the visual glitches reported on PC

Yeah I know this…now.

Same boat, but with the longsword. DS3 conditioned me to expect to roll through the entire game with the knight class starting equipment, but I’ve upgraded the sword to +5 already and it’s less useful in a lot of situations than some of the random pickups I’ve found lying around.

  • The whip I used to wreck the red AI summon in the hub area with R1 spam outranges and out stuns it
  • The torch that lets you breath fire is more effective against swarms of weak enemies
  • An upgraded unique rapier you get as a quest reward hits harder, faster, and uses less stamina

I can’t tell if I’m old and bad, if the combat’s different, or if I’m levelling wrong or not enough (probably because the world’s spread out and I’m skipping over things).

There’s a good chance I’ll end up switching to faith or looking up whatever the equivalent of DS2’s easy mode weapons are (giant club, lightning longsword).

Also, I rode around just finding maps thanks to @Broco’s tip. Some places have a lot of one color. People seem to like Caelid, but I’m fully expecting to fight a room full of dragon butts there.

the word i would use is ā€œacceptablyā€

plenty of stuttering, pop-in, dropping below 20, not registering inputs, texture glitching

I’m trying to embrace the jank because it’s the most fun and exciting. I know my build is suboptimal, but I guess I’m just used to optimal builds from knowing souls back and forth. I’m still going pump vigor, end/str/dex for weapons+midroll, then faith like I normally do, but… do I want more end for different gear? I don’t know. Shit just drops randomly and I keep wondering if I need more end.

I have a Short Spear +4 and Short Bow +3. Killing the birds in Stormveil is hard.

Oh theres lots of lod popping and texture stutter but I havent encountered any input loss or other gameplay effecting issues myself. Apologies if that becomes the case further in, perhaps in denser areas.
When I say perfect I really mean ā€œI can play itā€ my standards are pretty low lol

I sometimes see some slowdown (on original PS4) when there’s a crowd of enemies and I introduce my three wolves (now slightly upgraded) into the mix. But I don’t mind that at all. Like slowdown during a boss explosion in a Treasure shooter, it kind of adds to the effect.

I think I must have missed a mine somewhere because I have a ton of 3+ stones (especially 4) but I’ve been needing one more level 2 stone for hours. But my claymore is doing just fine at its current level. (Especially since I put the Wild Strikes ash on it. That’s got me out of a lot of bad situations.)

oh yeah i should note the invisible enemies thing is not totally fixed. it’s very noticeable when riding a horse - my horse goes invisible, and so does everyone else if they didn’t already load while i was on foot

i walk a lot

yeah if I summon skeletons during a boss fight that involves a horse in any way (mine or theirs) then I get ray harryhausen skeletons, which rules

Stuck working and it just occurred to me that maybe the longsword is always out of range because my shield sucks and I can probably afford to carry that turtle shell now. And if I have a really nice shield, maybe I can just poke with a spear or something. Ugh, work!

i’ve been having a great time with that turtle shield, btw. it has a buff ability that lets you block things that you have no business blocking.

How much are y’all using the new riposte mechanic? I guess I missed a tutorial or something or just didn’t know about it but now that I’ve found out about it I’m just using it non-stop. For enemies where you have enough poise to block a couple hits it really simplifies fights

wait what

Are you talking about the mechanic where, after you block a hit, you can press R2 to do an extra strong attack in response? I’ve been using that now and then. I like it as an addition to the combat. Seems like it might be really strong for tank characters.

They mentioned it in one room of the opening tutorial cave, that’s where I learned about it.

I was thinking the same. I’m never in range for it, but I probably will be if I use a better shield. I actually have a talisman that improves that move.

Coincidentally, I stripped down a bit and tried the shell’s ability against Miriam yesterday. It didn’t do anything for me there because she’s too dang magical, but it’s easy to see how these things might all overlap. I’m not sure how I feel about all this thinking I have to do though.

riposte is definitely good but you can get punished for it pretty hard because it’s not invincible nor is it guaranteed to hit. it’s essentially a fast swing after block that does good poise damage. i keep trying to use it like the parry that lance has in monster hunter (which is invincible) and it’s definitely not that.

press r2 immediately after blocking

Speaking of poise, I actually kind of miss that poise bar from Sekiro. I find it pretty tough to predict when an enemy’s going to lose their poise. Same for myself, come to think of it.

Yeah it’s definitely not as unstoppable as the ol’ parry/visceral but it’s SO easy to do in comparison. The window is very generous

yeah, you have to get a feel for it and react to it, which i’m not against. sometimes a poise bar makes combat feel more mechanical than i like it, but i’ve not played sekiro.
