Elden Ring (Part 1)

Any pro-tips for a lvl33 against this guy?

He also eventually creates a dragon tail with light like that.
It’s a stupidly quick attack just to hit you when you dodge his attacks and get behind him for a hit.
Or when you are too far, in which case he extends said tail on his second sing to make a hit from the western end of Europe to the the eastern end.

Even pre-open open world, in these games I’m never sure if a really really difficult enemy is a sign that I need to try another route or if I just suck. This new model seems to confound that.

If you are stuck, you should interpret as a suggestion that you can go to plenty of places before, maybe grow up, and get back later.
Or you can get stuck around that single difficult enemy.
Since it is a FromSoft you will probably be able to overcome eventually.

Personally I am also a bit bumped that this is a “sandbox” exploration, and that these games grew apart from a more “metroidvania” standard.
That was one of the details they were so unique about compared to everything else that is becoming an “OPEN WORLD” game.
Still… not like FromSoft was doing an exceedingly good job after DS1 and Bloodborne.
It was all a bit “dungeon > path to next > dungeon > path to next > dungeon”.

[edit] Still, there was a welcomed comfort in that standard [/edit]

oh boy that dungeon

I came back to margit hours and levels later. my weapon is now two levels stronger!

unfortunately, it’s also sacred enchanted, and thus does less damage to margit, who appears to be holy resistant

also, three of my levels went into INT, so that I could get holy weapon enchant thing. except I can’t use it on my sacred enchanted weapon. and even if I could, it wouldn’t hurt margit

I’m bad at video games. I guess I’ll try again in ten more hours

ok everyone post your margit tips:

  • use the jellyfish bc it’s stronk 1:1
  • use ashes with weapon arts that can cause stagger (like, say, the spear’s starting piercing WA)
  • remember, the general online populace is not good, so random summoning = bad (at least for now)
  • fire grease is nice
  • Same old same old… Follow the butt, careful for the ocasional tail attack
  • Back out from sword combos… Can’t see a dodge dance that would avoid all the attacks.
  • Get ready to do as much damage as you can after his jump attacks. Just time your dodge nicely into the attack.

any one playing this on ps4? just wondering if you think you are having a compromised experience or not. the videos i’ve watched make it seem fine. my copy isn’t coming until monday :[

i beat Margit in a somewhat different way

sadly, no online right now because the Xbox servers are still down. i put in about 6 hours yesterday, though. i think it plays pretty nicely on Series X, though definitely not maintaining 60fps at all or most times.

for Margit, i basically: summoned an AI player outside his entrance, summoned the wolves, allowed everyone to distract him while i came in from behind, using a 2H Sword Skill Attack, which eventually staggers him, and then you can go in for a backstab. oh, and dodge/back away from the sword slashes. i had the jellyfish and tried it once, and it was definitely useful, but the wolves served my purposes, more or less.

so far i feel like this game has been a lot safer feeling than other Souls games. i like the amount of unexplained things i’ve encountered, like those two giants pulling a…carriage? i’m not sure what it is.

i chose to play as a Vagabond and just kind of generalize my character. mostly i’m investing in STR, DEX, and STA, but i have put in a little bit into a couple other categories as i like and have needed. i considered restarting, early on, with a more “interesting” build, but so far, i’m having a good time slicing folks up.

i don’t understand how to use magic; i think i need like, a wand, right? would need to find one of those, first.

i like the combination of a skill/magic meter and the ability to replenish flasks via fighting enemies. it gives the action an extra little push.

it’s cool how even though things kill me, it doesn’t piss me off the way it did in Sekiro.

One thing I accidentally discovered with Margit: When you stagger him, you can go right up to his front side and do a light attack to initiate a Bloodborne style visceral attack that does extra damage. Isfet made it sound like you can backstab him at that point too if it’s easier?

got summoned into a game with two hosts?

There’s an item you can get that makes you look like you’re a host when you’re not, so maybe that’s what’s going on. I don’t know whether it puts the text above your head though.

i picked the Fanged Imp Ashes as my starting gift and found them to be more useful than the jellyfish or wolves, personally. there’s two of them, so they do a decent job of juggling his aggro, and they live longer than the wolves. still, i had to make a bit of a conscious effort to preserve their lives throughout the fight, because he decimated me in seconds one-on-one.

in his first phase i found i often didn’t have to dodge much, just walk toward his left and get behind during his windups. once he brings out the hammer it gets a lot more dancey. remember when he jumps you can roll directly toward him to score a few free hits.

still an absolute pain

I forget where I found my faith casting implements bc I don’t use them, and I started with a wand so I had magic from the start, but the two wands I’ve found beyond that were in the forest to the southeast and the swamp in the far east

oh that’s probably what the glowing circle effect was on one of them

also you can easily bleed margit and it takes a good chunk off his health each time, at least as much as a visceral attack (or whatever they’re called in this.) i was struggling horribly on this fight (vagabond start) til i tried the morning star i picked up somewhere

I was just putting my sign down to be summoned in stormveil castle all night and eventually got my stats up enough to wield this

have not actually made it all the way through this castle to a fog gate or 2nd bonfire at any point
