DooM

This is cool. I’ve had Quake in my steam library since 2006. I wish they would do the same thing for Hexen 2.

I only ran through E1M1 on this new Quake release on the Xbox and it works great with a controller, better then I was expecting, but even after cranking the sensitivity up I think I still need to mess with the settings (if they’re available) and tweak the dead zones or something because the look acceleration plateaus too quickly for me to want to put real time into it.

Though I could probably just plug in a mouse and keyboard?

I wish there was an option to toggle the rickety, stop-motion looking animation some versions of Quake had. What was the cause of that? Is it part of an intentional style, or something like a bit of optimization because of limited hardware that’s become aesthecized?

this remaster sure looks good, been messing around with the new episode. I suck as ever, but it’s fun. there doesn’t appear to be a way to bind weapons anywhere, which sucks hard. they only let you change the bind for the weapon wheel? I’m not using a fucking weapon wheel

Turn off model interpolation to get the original animation style back

oooh thanks!

The models were animated at 10FPS, I forget if there was a particular reason for it. Though IIRC they were also animated without skeletons so having to grab a bunch of vertices and move them around probably gave the artists some desire to limit the frame counts. Also one of Hexen II’s advancements over Quake was models animated at a whopping 20 FPS.

Can’t you still do it through the console?

yeah, figured out that still works.

has anyone else’s hud graphics gone all anti-aliasy for some reason, or were they always like that in this update? i was too busy dying to shambler lightning to notice before now

i think it’s always been like that. seen other people notice it too. probably will get fixed.

i… fixed it
you’d think a professional qa person would be capable of providing repro steps for everyone but i really wasn’t paying attention at all

(i think it’s something to do with the Apply command in the graphics page that contains resolution settings)

Theres a few problems with the port so far. It seems to choke whenever there’s a lot of particles on screen and there’s notable, unpleasant input lag if vsync is on

Also some rendering errors (I can frequently see the seams between level brushes)

It’s a lovely port overall, and I appreciate the inclusion of the soundtrack, the low resolution mode, and quake 64 (and the crt shader they put on quake 64 is definitely one of the best I’ve seen in a professional vidcon)

So I expect these few problems to get resolved with a patch or two and until then, I’m going to try to beat the game again on nightmare because doing that with the added challenge of occasional lag gives me considerable bragging rights

Maybe this is kind of contrary to the purpose of it being a remaster, but if this is the only version available on consoles, it would be nice if there was a 4:3 switch somewhere like the doom ports have.

So if this has crossplay does that mean PC players are just destroying console ones with controllers?

The way they phrase it I think it’s supposed to be only against pc ppl using a controller

I was the only Switch player on a server the other day, and I was consistently coming in a close second. Playing with a pad isn’t optimal but it surprisingly wasn’t as bad as I expected.

I also thought this and found out they totally had bones

Nope! Tried it just now (Xbox One X). The game will recognize the keyboard in the input menu if you press a key while in the menu (all the keyboard commands populate the list alongside the controller commands) but in game is non-responsive. No response from the mouse at all I was wondering if it was broken but both devices work fine when plugged into a computer and there are other reports that mouse/keyboard doesn’t work even when plugged into just one usb port.

So that’s some horseshit that hopefully someone will straighten out at some point. I’ll suck it up for now (or get the steam version lol) because I never played Quake 64 or the original two expansions (and that new Machine Games episode looks siiick).
