discount elysium (deals thread 2)

i did the turkey thing when forza 5 came out and it worked out to be like £70 for three years

definitely wouldn’t maintain a subscription without sick dealz, barely use it

just did this for real

  • missed the part where you flip recurring billing on and off with each code for an extra month on each code
  • did not, as a recently lapsed subscriber, have to pay $15 to convert it, just $1

it worked out to $2.55/mo despite my error

Geneforge is one of the free Epic Game Store games of the weeks and I have a vague recollection of some folks here speaking well of it, so hey.

Oh, shit, and here I was going to skip it thinking it was some crappy filler game

Well I used to be an Amiga user so I have a brain problem whereby I keep thinking Worms is a game I should play. I haven’t played a Worms since…Armageddon? (Update: Oh, no, World Party, on DC.) (Update again: No, Worms Open Warfare on PSP. Jeez.) And I didn’t really like the newfangled things like the Ninja Rope or whatever. Anyway, although you can get PS1 versions of Worms games on the PS Store now for $5 or something, there are also a few newer Worms there: Battlegrounds, and the latest, W.M.D, which goes back to 2D, and actually looks rather nice, in its high-res 2D way. Price tracking sites said it often gets discounted from $30 to $5, and that I just missed the sale. But today, after idly checking the store site via Google for a new sale in vain again, I happened to scroll down a bit and noticed that although neither Worms W.M.D ($30)

nor the older one, Worms Battlegrounds ($25)

are on sale, the two-pack of them together IS currently on sale–for $7, through the 6th of July : P

So I got that.

On quick look, I hate how the whole screen kinda flashes a bit when anything explodes in either game, but anyway, W.M.D does look nice, the new vehicles and bases are interesting, the AI still takes forever to move, oh and there’s a free DLC pack

that adds a bunch of stuff and there’s a huge amount of worm costumes and landscape types and voices and music and things for setting up your custom team.

And Battlegrounds is really janky with 3D 2D graphics and stupid physics gadgets and blobby water that can blub around and in which you can drown just a little per turn if you want.

Sale!

alright select butts i know there’s some ice-pick lodge nerds in here and all their games are on mega sale right now. i’ve never played or even seen anything of theirs other than the steam trailers but i’ve seen pathalogic come up enough times in conversation to be interested so, what’s the deal? are they any good? they sure have art direction that appeals to me a great deal.

I have not spent a significant time with the original, but I did play 2 for hours. It left a very powerful impression on me as a game where everything–the beautiful dialogue, the difficulty, the mechanics–pushed its themes. I think its worth trying at least, but it probably takes a little more time and focus to learn if you like it or not. It’s probably a great example of this phenomenon: If you’re sold before you start, you’ll love it. If you’re skeptical about it, you’ll hate it.

Anyone who posts on sb ought to play Pathologic, even for just an hour. One of the most important games.

i haven’t played pathologic 1 but 2 is completely crucial at least. i have it in my head that it’s a pseudo-remake of 1 or something but maybe i’m making that up?

No, that’s correct. Kind of an Evil Dead 1, Evil Dead 2 situation

except pathologic 1 is way better than evil dead 1

you can get most of the *vibes* of pathologic in about an hour, so yeah, definitely a good idea

I swear that rockpapershotgun write up that first popularized the game did far more damage to pathologic’s reputation than good

whenever pathologic comes up i get this in my head

It is so much more than just bleak! But yes, it is also that.

as someone who doesn’t really like stage plays, misery simulators, or thinking too hard, i think that was as far as i was ever gonna get

yeah even if you don’t end up liking it, pathologic 2 is absolutely still worth playing. there’s nothing else remotely like it
