at this point, the series was kind of running out of steam creatively imo, but what i wouldn’t give for otherwise 100% faithful remakes of the earlier games with this graphical style (or better)
gekisou dangun racer: onsoku buster dangun dan is some kind of rpg about building model wipeout vehicles then taking part in semi-turnbased races. i couldn’t figure out how to play it, but it has some beautiful pixel art for all the locations you can go to.
also, there’s lots of logos for the real model company tamiya, so i’ll to look up if there was a real toyline at some point
7, 8 and forte are a melange of x and classic series ideas implemented to varying degrees of success, but I definitely prefer them to the back half of the nes games. in any case, forte is one of the most satisfying mega man characters to control across the whole meta series.
what game is this?
Golvellius: Valley of Doom for Sega Master System
oh yeah, i like 8 a lot. i’m less enthusiastic about 7, but would probably rather play it than 5 or 6.
i guess i just feel like every time i see footage of 8, my first thought is ‘i wish they kept making these,’ except then i remember that they would probably just continue to get less interesting and fun to actually play even if they stayed cool looking.
i never played 9 or 10 because more NES style graphics is just like… not what i want from mega man i guess.
bc of that i’m kind of shocked there hasn’t been any kind of effort to “remaster” the (imo unassailable) first three games in the series to give them a graphical boost. i feel like they would still hold up as great platformers not just as ‘retro’ curiosities. i guess we have already had a mega man debate on here recently though so maybe we dont need to rehash it again.
mega man is just so cool, i want to be him
i do recommend 9 as a dogme 95 exercise in self-restraint. no slide or charge shot because those are impurities.
I’m playing more of Sunshine than 64 in the 3D Mario pack probably because it seems a little more accessible to me and they seem to really push the 2000s polygonal fantasy dreamworld angle in some places e.g. Gelato Beach’s sand bird sky expanse and the Noki Bay grandpa shrinking you to fit into a bottle floating in another stunning sky void to collect red coins to practice the underwater controls so you can be a better eel-dentist.
When I finally did it, my patient left me a heart of coins to show gratitude
The approach to Noki Bay’s old-school platforming level has this great view but there’s probably too many wall kick jumps to set up for me to want to keep trying for that shine.
My only solid memories of Galaxy were Gusty Gardens and maybe the beachplanet but that corner is already well provided for by Sunshine and Odyssey’s ramune soda bottle beachworld.
Mario sunshine is so good! I forgot about the weird umlaut M
It’s pronounced mareo
I think there was something like this on PSP or Vita for Megaman 1 and maybe X.
oh yeah! but the mm1 one at least was grotesque
it did have a level editor though, which was a cool idea
I’m really starting to consider Sunshine the Dark Souls II of 3D Mario games.
yes we do
