i oscillate between finding this very hard to play, fatiguing even and then being utterly engrossed for hours at a time
if i were to give an honest assessment of my playtime with this game it is that while I appreciate the sheer audacity of the overwhelming menu ui design and its willingness to spend so much of its runtime forcing you to stare at wild techno interface graphics and also the theme implications of thankless repetition it started bumming me out a little having to walk down the same ramps and see the same floating dog tag links and wait through the same perfunctory congratulations and amazement at the shape of the delivered cargo etc. this is also my BOTW review re: shrines, if i were
also this would be so much better if i could play cocteau twins in the background with spotify
Like every pop song that plays to accompany a breathtaking view has sad 2010’s folkpop vocals and sounds exactly the same, it’s kind of a drag.
Pop Virus is a flat out all killer no filler superbanger though.
I always thought of the camera grab as being from BB’s point of view. But yeah, he directly winks at you and stuff if you let him idle for a bit. I was thinking there would be more physical fourth wall breaking (Snake, put the controller on your arm).
Perhaps we don’t see that because this game is destined for a PC release, and they didn’t want to get too specific with PS4 features.
I started skipping all of these after like the second time I saw them. Not some kind of weird brag just a QOL PSA for everyone
(the only one of these you can’t skip is the BT warning sequence and even just that is almost intolerable imo so I’m impressed)
yeah. but like, internalizing “oh i’m gonna recycle these Units for The Good, so I need to skip once after the confirm, then twice after the count-up” becomes its own bummer DDR start-X-R1-oh the R1 didn’t take-R1-start-X-start-X, etc.
let alone hiking a mountain w/300kg on your back in inclement weather, I’ve played quite a bit and I still get a little self congratulatory brain scratch when I remember to hold x to confirm multiple selections of my cargo set up instead of doing everything individually and fumbling down to the bottom of the menu to proced
DEATH STRANDING makes doing the dishes feel like chained noscopes (-abdn, * * * *)
Death Stranding is this gen’s Dragon’s Dogma
ok maybe not this isn’t tracking as well as i had hoped it honestly makes more sense with mgs5, but I thought about it while playing
but like it is interesting seeing the production realities of content generation and perceptual value padding and cinematic gravitas pressing up against the deeply laudable frame of building an entire experience out of avatar operation. how much time and money did this game cost? how’s that comparable to other stuff? what percentage of that was lost in the startup of an entire studio? how much of the gameplay planning was intentionally steered towards compensating for those realities? i mean i guess that is a question/answer feedback loop for all huge projects.
it’s got that compelling character action + empty mmorpg beta vibe.
Got another star, up to 14 now. I’m pushing 50 hours and I’m in episode 5 at the part where I need to take Mama to Lockne but I’m just rebuilding the highway and then using it to make those premium deliveries in a fraction of the time and getting fat stacks of likes. I use trucks a lot now and whenever I have to get to an area I can’t reach by truck I’m quickly reminded of those early hours and I’m like oh right this is the real Death Stranding how far I’ve come…
Using bikes as much as I can makes this the best Excitebike sometimes.
Nothing quite like the feeling of boosting over the top of a mountain and realizing you’ve made a glorious mistake and your trip to the Seam is gonna have to be worth it.
Honoring my dead president mother by riding my anime paintjobbed dirtbike to the roof of the incinerator, looking for rare giallo soundtracks before stumbling and bumbling my way downstream to the sea, pretending to be an otter
I keep trying to run off and explore only to hit impenetrable walls where my ladders are unauthorized.
Really wanted to get to the giant crater but nope.
Just got the southern knot and am having a lot of fun with my stolen truck. Next play I’m going to experiment more with infiltration of the MULE camps for metals. Did the server recover mission without being seen, kinda wish I had grabbed more stuff.
this is incredibly charming (watch the video) https://twitter.com/HIDEO_KOJIMA_EN/status/1199547118966337537
