#CYBERPUNK 2077 šŸ’»

I always like to make fun of the witcher games for being like garth marenghiā€™s darkplace but this is almost too ā€œon the noseā€ of a garth marenghism.

Cyberpunk 2077 is ā€œGarth Marenghiā€™s Snow Crashā€

With Red Dead Redemption 2 and this weā€™re deep into a period of these mega-games that are set dressing as their primary strength, and I donā€™t think this forum has the language or taste for it. More than anything it makes me think of '90s comic-book-y blockbusters spinning around and throwing off cash independent of the project goals: Batman & Robin, Waterworld, Tank Girl; thereā€™s weirdness and sensory pleasure inside but nobody has grabbed control.

I think thereā€™s an enormous difference between this and Rockstarā€™s recent output and similarly-budgeted EA and Ubisoft games. In their luxuriousness these games have observations and individual pieces inside them and ambition; itā€™s no mean feat to set a bar for a production and insist in every stage upon that bar to the detriment of tightness or a design thrust. The EA and Ubisoft competitors instead strive for balance of cost in all things and observe nothing; thereā€™s a constant push to cut everything down and automate more and more production to the minimum viable standard even as they keep scoping up their team, and what results is games that cost 2/3 as much and are a tenth as interesting to look at.

I donā€™t think mockery is a good approach to this because I donā€™t think itā€™s dumb in the way Bioshock: Infinite is. Itā€™s sick and awe-ful; itā€™s the boar king in Princess Mononoke

I remember playing Assassinā€™s Creed II and kind of recognizing it was busy work but busy work in an incredibly well-realized slice of the world. Iā€™m auto-platforming in the Duomo! Iā€™d still consider it a good game on that strength alone.

With RDR2 and Cyberpunk the worlds are ironically more derivative and less interesting than Assassinā€™s Creedsā€™ paperback historical fiction thrillers.

The transphobic energy drink ad is still in the game a year and a half after they half-assed contrition for games media. I think itā€™s at least a little worthy of mockery.

Watched the start of this and my biggest impression is wow thats some boring fucken music for 50 years from now! Like dude popular rap music sounds so fucking weird compared to 15 years ago so why is this future rap just a dude with a super bland voice over a cheap arse reggaeton beat.

Oh yeah I compared it to that clip of Joe Biden grooving to a cellphone blasting Despacito

Okay, another session over and all I can say is that this game bores me to tears. Itā€™s somehow even worse than RDR2 in that regard.

CP77ā€™s open world and its architecture are spectacular. Best Iā€™ve ever seen by miles.

These kinds of games are going to be really cool in 10-20 years when indies can make them due to advances in technology and start to actually put videogames that are worth a damn in these environments

Gamedevs simply cannot conceive of such concepts as ā€œPlayboi Cartiā€

How far do you have to play to hear Refused?

Personally Iā€™m waiting for the discourse to catch up with the ending where you force feminise Keanu Reeves.

Started off in a garage, gave the sheriff of the local hamlet some unintended sass, hacked a comms tower for One Last Favor From Someone then immediately turbo-slammed two civilians piggybacking one another across the street in my souped-up Vauxhall Nova so fast I was unable to register if I had encountered a glitch or not but kept speeding off-road to avoid detection all the same

The next two hours were spent marveling at egregious texture popups and thinking Iā€™d landed inside Blade Runner 2049 but decorated with advertising so juvenile that not even I would be buying any of it for a dollar, although I probably spent more time adjusting the dual analogues to improve on the default moving and aiming to not resemble modern Fallout games (but worse)

The iguana was the best single minute spent so far

i might be off base here, but if anything, i really think this game is the perfect symbol of the impasse that AAA is currently at.

i think the only way in which it could have been improved is if it had been givenā€¦a few more years of development? i just think weā€™re seeing the limitations of what is possible when you make games that are delivering state-of-the-art tech alongside a massive open world RPG, and trying to deliver that all in what would be considered a ā€œreasonableā€ amount of time. like, presumably if they spent more time on this, by the time it would be released, all of the assets and tech would be behind the times or just average, right? so the goal is to get it out as quickly as is possible, and so we get this kind of muddled non statement of a game.

like idk, now that the game is built, maybe iterations on it/sequels will manage to hone what is here with this game in some way, but what i played mostly felt like i was doing chores, except without the satisfaction of having a clean home, afterwards.

and i assume there will be sequels because the game sold so well, already. so maybe nothing will be learned? idk.

simultaneously, since it does remind me of other games that i find equally boring, which the majority of gamers seem to cherish and hold dear as exemplars of the genre, presumably my/our take on this game is going to be in the minority.

i also just want to comment on the constant dissonance of this gameā€™s approach to gender; itā€™s just so facile. i created a character with a really strong ā€œtheyā€ energy, but ultimately itā€™s your voice that determines the pronouns people use for you. it really broke any sense of immersion, because it just seems so silly that in this game where so much is customizable and this future where people modify themselves in inconceivable ways, we still have a binary at all.

voice picking your pronouns is the grossest shit!

there were one million two hundred thousand people watching this game at launch!

i hate all the free advertising this game is getting through glitches, im convinced theyve had a patch ready to get rid of them all but they know how much people watch glitch videos and what other way to get buzz than clipping your dick and titties in the character creation screen

i think the end of dragon quest non choices are funny and exactly what someone who plays this game deserves

So did they patch out the epilepsy triggers yet or

They just leave that shit in?

my opinion with very little idea of what the game is like: you can probably make an interesting comparison between this and the recent demonā€™sā€™ souls remaster in terms of their emphasizing different aspects of each game and yet ending up at pretty much the same garish hi fidelity weird space

iā€™m probably off base but i probably donā€™t care

I think they have zero fixes ready because everything indicates the last couple years of dev have been a trash fire running on a burned out team.
