There is a “style” trailer showing off some of the different clothes in the game and I think whoever was in charge of those did a great job! I’m hyped to dress up in this game for sure. Even though it’s, uhm, first person only.
Also from what I’ve heard all the locales like bars, clubs and the like are really well designed and feel more like real, lived in places than you’re used to in videogames and that’s interesting too. I really hope they nail the environment and it’s just fun to go exploring and exist in this space.
Regarding some of the issues that have been addressed in the thread, a very smart friend of mine contextualized them in a helpful way for me. If we split Cyberpunk into a pre and post-9/11 framework then maybe CDPR’s depiction makes a little more sense within the game world. With the onset of the Iraq war effectively shutting the door on Cyberpunk’s utopian possibilities and allowing the fatalist Fukuyama “end of history” mindset to creep into our collective consciousness. Maybe the racism and whatnot we’ve seen in the game thus far is just a reflection of Cyberpunk’s failure rather than a celebration of the genre.
In other words America’s invasion of Iraq essentially committed the globe to its stupidest realization possible and this game is a vision of that potential future. Also, let’s face it, Cyberpunk is such a 80’s/90’s genre than anything that’s come after truly is cheap pastiche because we’ve been living with the banalized Web 2.0 Cyberpunk where we now realize there’s nothing “aesthetic” about late capital, which might explain why 2077 is hyper-stylized to such a garish degree.
This is the opposite of what happened — the end of history was supposed to be the monopolar pax americana utopia and it became obvious that Fukuyama was the wrongest man alive by 1995.
I just meant in the sense that a cultural malaise sets in with idea that there is no future, or that if there is a future that its already been pre-determined. Admittedly, perhaps too literal an interpretation.
This is a first-person RPG/shooter in which players assume the role of a mercenary named V trying to make their way through the open-world of Night City. Players can explore futuristic locations, interact with citizens, perform missions, and engage in combat to complete various objectives within a storyline. Characters use handguns, machine guns, rifles, and explosives during frenetic firefights with humans and cybernetically enhanced enemies; players can also use melee weapons (e.g., wrist-mounted blades, enhanced limbs) to stab enemies and, in some cases, dismember them. Combat is frenetic, with frequent gunfire, cries of pain, explosions, and blood-splatter effects. Some locations depict mutilated corpses with open chest cavities and/or exposed organs/entrails. During one quest, players assist a character by hammering nails through his hands and feet; screaming sounds and blood effects accompany the scene. The game contains nudity and sexual material: Players can select a gender and customize their character; customization can include depictions of breasts, buttocks, and genitalia, as well as various sizes and combinations of genitals. Players can encounter events where they have the option to engage in sexual activities with other main characters or prostitutes—these brief sex scenes (from a first-person perspective) depict partially nude characters moaning suggestively while moving through various positions. Some scenes contain brief depictions of thrusting motions; other scenes depict a character’s head moving towards a partner’s crotch. The game contains frequent depictions and references to fictional drugs, including characters taking puffs/hits from a state-altering inhaler/stimulant; an animated billboard ad depicts a man snorting speed. Some sequences allow the player to drink alcoholic beverages repeatedly until the screen distorts; player’s character can also drive cars while drunk. The words “f**k” and “c*nt” appear in the dialogue.
Wait. The player helps someone out by putting nails through their limbs? Not… the player helps a torturer out by putting nails through someone else’s limbs? I’m not playing this game anytime soon or really paying attention to it other than skimming this thread, but… I’m real curious how you assist someone by torturing them.
Maybe it’s one of those, “Install a spycam in an inconspicuous corner of the ceiling missions”, but the spycam is your buddy?
