nothing says visionary like references to existing pop culture

In fairness, this is pretty clearly using an established name and lineage, so they aren’t being quite as brazen as you’d think.

I did not know that. Thanks, for reals.

Cyberpunk 2077, to me, seems like the kind of game that will have armchair aestheticians creaming their jeans over how lush and referential the game is, while saying nothing of interest or consequence, because whatever compelling narrative themes the game could have had will be absent by nature of its production. The hype is us convincing ourselves that we are seeing depth that likely isn’t there, data-ghosts in the cyber-matrix.

really not sure how hard one has to try to say ā€œthis looks like it sucksā€

Post can be empty?

Everyone else was using ten dollar words, I wanted in on the action

I don’t know what your deal is, you’re constantly acting like people don’t have a right to be offended by offensive things w/r/t this project in particular

I’m done challenging the pervasive elements here for reasons I already described, what you just said I basically read as ā€œthose elements don’t need to be substantiatedā€.

I really appreciate how I can blend in despite my professorial verbosity on SB even if I do Cmd. Data shit like forget contractions.

thank you, let’s not pretend y’all didn’t have a rip-roaring time tearing binfinite apart. I look forward to examining this trash under the microscope.

The cyberpunk game where you shoot black people in the ā€œAnimalsā€ gang and look at trans fetishization ads for a soft drink truly is a land of contrasts.

I wasn’t kidding about armchair aestheticians, because that’s just me. If it weren’t for all the weird skeevy responses from CDPR, I’d be way more interested. But now I’m just sad.

Looking forward to the arguments that will erupt from every game+adjacent space once this bad boy hits those hard drives.

It’s just as likely this’ll come out and be fucking flayed for an entirely boring reason like there’s a save destroying crash or the frame rate bites or it’s not true 4K or

as a hot couch aesthetician i say have a care my good bodies
some of us are really picky

I think this imagines a world where AAA developers think AT ALL about the cultural impact of the stories in their games. I’d love to hear a counter example, because I feel like I’m being the right amount of cynical here.

Having a director thoroughly screen every asset going into a game sounds implausible at best, especially considering how many assets are in modern AAA games.

This is the heart of my cynicism as well. Expecting some deep and nuanced narrative from Cyberpunk 2077 purely because of the genre feels like naivety to me.

this whole idea that people arent allowed to be cynical about games is fucking annoying. like this industry has proven time and time again it cant be trusted. cdpr is literally showing off their game with a demo where you gun down tons of black people in a gang called ā€œThe Animalsā€ and has a gross ad about trans people in it. its not my responsibility to give them the benefit of the doubt here. sometimes things are allowed to suck. this ā€œjust let people enjoy things!ā€ bullshit that is so pervasive online now is just a cover for anything bad that people like because they desperately want it to be above criticism. i get that your thing is being a just asking questions guy or whatever based on how you posted in the jon blow thread but like, this condescending ā€œall of you have surface level takes…hehā€¦ā€ thing is fucking obnoxious

You’re really warping my statements and clearly stated intents there, but the emotion is persuasive enough for folks to rally behind. I’ve already described what I needed to, have at it. It’s really going to get to you that I’m entirely serious about calling intelligent people out drunk on their own takes. Peace
