The new guy doing the story was Miura’s close personal friend and fellow mangaka Kouji Mori, apparently following a plot outline Miura put together before passing. Mori is okay but he isn’t a genius like Miura was. I read his manga, Holyland, a few years back and it wasn’t bad.
New Berserk is… fine. It’s not as good as Miura’s Berserk. The pacing feels too frantic, the art is still as lush as it was before but not quite as perfect.
Jim Shooter is especially infamous, everyone who ever worked with him loathed him and the comics world came together and celebrated when he finally got shitcanned
Rob Liefeld always speaks highly of him, probably because he’s one of the few people who was able to really benefit from the quasi royalties system that Shooter instituted.
I always thought it was wild that Miller’s Daredevil happened during his tenure since everyone was supposedly on a pretty short leash.
And of course Shooter wrote that story in the magazine format Hulk book where a bunch of 70s gay stereotypes attack Hulk in a YMCA bathroom.
So I sat in on an interview with a certain former writer/chief creative guy at the one of the big 2 and my only really contribution to the conversation was chiming in with and enthusiastic “Faust!” when he was trying to remember the name of the wild Tim vigil book that he came across as a teen.
I accidentally started reading Kaiji at the third series Gambling Fallen-Angel Kaiji instead of the first one Gambling Apocalypse Kaiji
It was incredible how the first chapter didn’t feature any gambling at all. It was just a debt-free Kaiji sitting peacefully in a sunny park, surrounded by happy families and next to a young woman who clearly has a crush on him, and despising every second of it
Finally got around to starting Uzumaki, as a Junji Ito first-timer, and ended up consuming the whole thing in one sitting! People weren’t kidding, it’s good stuff!! Read Gyo immediately after and was sadly underwhelmed… I’ve started on Tomie and I’m kinda getting the same slow, sinking, disappointed feeling…
Anyone have recommendations or is it generally agreed that Uzumaki is his best?
Oh yeah, forgot to say I read that too! Think it was included as an extra with the copy of Gyo I was reading… You’re right, I enjoyed it a lot more than Gyo!
