Cartoons (Part 2)

,

The whole conceit behind vampiric godhood and the solution to it was really quite inspired and the sort of thing that some of the later games would have pulled for sure

The studio seems to have improved steadily. You can watch Nocturne on its own in any case. In retrospect the best parts of the first series are the first two seasons, and one of them is like three eps long.

Mind you, does anyone actually rate their other output? I know they’ve done a Tomb Raider and that Masters of the Universe. I bounced off early Blood of Zeus, did that improve any?

I personally really loved the two Masters of the Universe movie things they did. The new characters seemed pretty half-assed though, and they’re weirdly forgotten about by the second movie. But! Overall it kicked ass.

Wait hold up what

After some of y’all were talking about it in here I finally got around to watching and finishing the first Castlevania series. It was good! I guess some spoiler-y thoughts:

Aw man poor Lenore. Obviously inverting what she did to Hector would be in poor taste but I hoped things would go better for her.

Actually in general the show was pretty damn good at making pretty much every main character likeable and charismatic in their own way. I didn’t think I’d get caught up in the Isaac/Hector stuff but wound up rooting for 'em both.

That said the only characters I kinda reviled the entire time were those weirdo Japanese… siblings? Several episodes of “Hey man do you got games on your phone can we see the games you got on your phone hey we heard you got games on your phone man stop bogarting those phone games man c’mon” and then they decide to fuck Alucard and kill him? Like I guess it was supposed to be “aw man Alucard can’t catch a break and will distrust humanity” and “those kids were also probably insane” but it was just a weird tangent. Even the dude who murdered kids was more likeable, which is kinda fucked.

The show ending with Death as the big bad was actually pretty satisfying. Dracula had his time! And Death was really nasty in his own way.

That said the villain MVP of the whole season is undoubtedly Carmilla. Too blinded by ambition to see what was going on around her but nevertheless was ruthless til her own determined end.

Cool show, hope Nocturne is at least as good.

granted that im not up-to-date on the crazier Scoobyverse stuff but its probably my favorite use of Hanna-Barbera since idk, Harvey Birdman? Space Ghost Coast-to-Coast??

also affirms my belief that H-B character designs are honestly very cute foundationally and it’s fun to see them modernized a bit and allowed to be more fluid and y’know animated

Making my way through Castlevania Nocturne and there’s just…I dunno, there’s something just off enough from the first series that I’m kinda not enjoying it as much.

I know the main writer (very much necessarily) was given the boot, but the writing is sorta eh, a lot of the voice acting is sorta eh.

They also go real fast and wild on vampire rules. A ton of these assholes are just running around in broad daylight. What the hell.

I mean I guess expecting lore consistency from Castlevania is goofy, but!

The big fight between Richter and the vampire lady was rad, though, and Olrox is great, so it’s not all bad.

Edit: OK the big ass fights in the last two episodes were pretty damn good. Still kinda eh on the whole thing, but those fights were good…

That’s a real good Kasem impression

Trying to figure out why COW Boys of Moo Mesa existed. I think out of all the shows I barely remember from childhood this is the one that made the least amount of sense.

I’m similarly haunted by the single season “Santo Bugito”…

this was one absolutely part of the turtles cash-in era with biker mice from mars and street sharks and whatnot. they hired a ninja turtles comic artist to try to make the next marketable funny animal franchise and this is what came out. interestingly, they have reappeared from time to time in turtles comics and tv shows years after their own show was cancelled

there’s a nice konami arcade run & gun (that feels pretty similar to sunset riders + mystic warriors) based on this series and scrolling through konami softographies was the first time i’d ever heard of it lol…
