No 2001 cartoon is complete without a bullet time parody.

the opening to the new gundam kinda sucks

it’s hard to tell how i’m feeling if i’m feeling anything particularly at all yet about the show and this is after two episodes. they’ve done a little bit of setup but i feel a bit lost as to what weight anything carries or why i’d care about anything. it’s not making me turn it off but i can’t tell why i should be invested. probably worth giving it some more time. but yeah, i’ve both felt it simply moves things along without establishing anything particularly emotional, and also maybe chickens out already on… you know… making you feel the weight of injustice and horror and tragedy that (good) gundam has. like, char literally averted the tragedy amuro accidentally caused in episode 1 of og gundam. the mp cause destruction in the city but all the animation is focused on environmental damage instead of human death and suffering (the scene feels like a parallell to the famous one in f91 but is lacking because of this). i have, maybe unjustifiably, already gotten the impression this show is softening things. however machu was very determined to get inside any fighting robot she can in order to beat up military police and while the setup for this was lacking, that in itself is nice. i love that people who don’t even watch gundam are mad about that

anyway i did not see the movie but absolutely everyone went crazy over that so i should probably trust there’s more to see

i tried the geequacks show and i just don’t like how over-embellished the mech design is, is sort of hard to read the action properly

I’m digging it, the animation’s real good and I’m super curious to see where this is all going. I like the main gal well enough and I see potential for fun character dynamics to emerge.

Even if the show mostly ends up being weird spectacle the spectacle seems cool.

The Gundam fighting riot police was also a highlight for me.

the majority of the movie has been covered between the released episodes so far, episode 3 should wrap most of that stuff up.

fundamentally i think the way the tv show has handled this material is significantly worse than the way the movie did it. i can see why they felt the need to open with the ~new~ stuff, but if thats the case im not sure any of the 0079 stuff is that additive, and would probably have worked better if they had released it as some sort of prologue - or made the movie cut available via streaming first.

ok, i’ve been seeing people saying they’ve removed some scenes the movie had and i wonder how much that has to do with the way i feel like they are rushing through things and the general feel that something is missing

edit: is my issue actually that the pacing is wrong?

there was a big chunk that would have been at the end of episode 2 that was massively condensed for tv, i could see it maybe appearing later in the show if it’s relevant.

mostly the difference is that the movie opens with all the 0079 for half the movie and then cuts to what i assume is episode 1 & 3 of the tv show as a second half. that structure just works so much better than doing the (condensed) 79 stuff as an episode 2.

the 0079 stuff still felt quite rushed in the movie to me, but in a way that seems more intentional when its an introduction. felt almost like a compilation movie in a positive way.

I definitely felt that ep 1s editing and pacing felt off for how I experienced it in the theater. Tv version of ep 1s contents felt very hurried with little breathing room. I can’t remember any specific cuts but it felt like they got more time to soak in backdrops and giving characters a few frames to think or process what’s in front of them.

Episode 2 mostly felt the same to my memory of the movie section. It’s honestly hard to say what the best play would be here. The movie was obviously cut in favor of the already installed gundam audience that would make the effort to go out to the theater. TV seems to try being more approachable for newer fans by starting with the current story and rolling you back to see the foundation. I honestly feel this is going to be a lighter show so I don’t think it’s in tone for the MPs go full cop brutality on the slum town people where just tearing apart thier homes is violence enough. I’m most interested in seeing how even with a Zeon “victory” space people are still trapped by a new warden and less subtly expose the hypocrisy of their wartime objectives.

the first two episodes being so hectic in the way they are cut while also being two distinct storylines is nuts. feels hard to be grounded to the events

remembered there was a second castlevania nocturne season, binged through it this evening
good trash, i wouldn’t mind if they keep making these

Spent about a week plowing through The Venture Bros., including the movie. Kinda…bittersweet on the whole thing, I guess. The last two seasons feel kinda meandering - not without good parts, for sure! It just seems like they were trying to find their footing with a new setting, found it, and…then the show got canceled.

Well, y’know. Canceled in that “years and years between seasons” sort of way they did this show in particular.

Never did get to see if Tim Tom was wrong, and Kevin did have psychic powers…

The action is very strong and I’m glad they’ve translated that to the scenes of dialogue this season too.

turning elizabeth bathory into lion-o was a cool move at very least

i saw some pictures that had like shot for shot comparisons of that Castlevania show with un-assailable y2k visual masterpiece Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust and tbh whatever the intent it kinda made me want to watch it now

Trying to think if I have any other final thoughts on The Venture Bros…I had put off watching the last three seasons (turns out I did watch 4, but I was probably drinking and forgot most of it when I did) for years out of…I guess denial, but nope, it’s over.

Without getting into spoilers, hmm.

  • Helper has gotta be the funniest character in the show. I don’t think I laughed harder at anything than some of the scenes with that dumb robot.
  • After Helper I think my favorite characters are probably…not in any order of the triad here but: Orpheus, Billy, Shore Leave, Tim Tom and Kevin, maybe Dean? And Rusty of course, god he’s such a dick.
  • As funny as the show can be I don’t know if anything ever tops this bit from season 2.

Really glad I saw the GQuuuuuuX event in theaters because it was the superior version of the first three episodes, but I’m bummed I have to wait until episode four to see anything new.
