Cartoons (Part 2)

kenji nakamura def deserves his share of blame

look at his series director credits besides mononoke

Trapeze, [C]: Control, Tsuritama, and Gatchaman Crowds

shallow, pretentious garbage

hard to argue with that, just several iterations of an inspector calls

It took until this post for me to realize we were not discussing Princess Mononoke. I was very concerned.

seems like this year’s one good futurama episode might be over already. it’s NFTs (i know, three years too late) and i’m fucking dying. i can’t even keep up with the jokes they’re so fast

The episode before that might have been pretty good if they’d thought of an ending.

the medicine seller is an all timer of a character design but the show is just bad mushishi

mushishi is excellent though, don’t let this comparison be seen as a disparagement of mushishi

the director of the mushishi anime is the one doing the new uzumaki adaptation

a new batman cartoon came out today!
i watched the first episode and it’s pretty good. uses a lot of the btas formula: tells a whole story in a single episode, set at some vague mashup time of every part of the past hundred years, etc.

Just watched the first episode as well. Great start! Also loved the call back to the intro sequence from the Animated Series (you’ll know it when you see it ).

Also really digging how they’re using all the same characters as before but changing them slightly. Didn’t know that Penguin is female this time arojnd! Stuff like that’s a nice surprise.

Hamish Linklater seems to be alright as Batman so far. He’s not quite aping Kevin Conroy and his voice is a bit softer. I think he’s fine.

Looking forward to watching the rest. Kind of disappointed there are only 10 episodes. Maybe it’ll get picked up again for more.

I watched three more episodes of Caped Crusader. Can’t say I’ve been disappointed yet. I like how Bruce Wayne doesn’t respond to therapy because of course he wouldn’t. Maybe that’s his character arc. He actually deals with the trauma of losing his parents and stops being Batman.

Osaka station also has the incredibly bizarre ā€œChicago Galleryā€ beneath it with a dedication from, iirc, Blagojevich, and a bunch of improbably expensive art just hanging in a subway hallway

I got a kick out of it when passing by, because it feels like a sister cities kickback deal that the Japanese treated with characteristic earnestness

Watching the Olympics had me wondering about it so I looked it up and saw that earlier this year, the Yuri on Ice movie was canceled, which is a drag

So what is Yamamoto Sayo up to now?

after all these decades of being lazy and add-riddled, i finally sat down and watched all 26 episodes of the original evangelion. real controversial opinion here: i thought it was awesome. though, it probably isn’t all that great i found myself relating to shinji an awful lot. an awful, awful lot.

I finished Caped Crusader. So I guess this was basically an origin story season unlike the original series which didn’t do origin stories, except for original characters. The running theme here seems to be ā€œmake it like the original but different in every wayā€. More grounded and realistic, though a couple episodes featured villains that were supernatural.

Like one episode the bad guy is a straight up ghost. You think it’s going to be revealed that he’s a dude in a costume with clever technology but nope he’s just a ghost exactly like he appears to be. Seemed out of place here though there’s plenty of supernatural-ish stuff going on in the overall Batman lore.

I’d watch another season if it happens.

I sat down for 2 or 3 eps last night. So far perfectly cromulent but for being more obvious a period story my memories of the BTAS feels like it plays better for that despite being a weird era amalgamation that slides closer to modern as it goes. The setting backdrops feel a little to clean for what they seem to want be doing.

uh, yeah, wow. yeah, man.

Finally started watching Steven Universe recently. I had a bunch of character reveals spoiled by Tumblr fanart from years ago but other than that, a lot of the show is small backstory reveals to something bigger which has been interesting to see unfold alongside the show - which is really really good and I’m liking a lot.
