Cartoons (Part 2)

I wish this wasn’t CGI but I suppose this is the kind of compromise that has to be made to make something look like Trigun on modern anime budgets.

Didn’t click til a few days ago that Paramount Plus has Nickelodeon stuff, Nickelodeon now owns the Ninja Turtles, and that Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles might be on there.

It’s good! I’m sure it made a bunch of people mad because it’s extremely goofy and made Raphael the leader and April O’Neil a little black girl, but goddamn it’s fun and genuinely funny? Not Marvel movie “laughter sign flashing” heavily telegraphed jokes, but laugh out loud stuff!

It feels like the animators and writers are in sync on this thing. There’s a bunch of…I don’t know if subtle is the right word, but they don’t call a ton of attention to some of the visual gags that are nods and references to other anime or cartoons. And the fights! Holy shit, they go all out animating those.

I remember hearing about this one and having to watch the first episode in 5 minute chunks with a ton of ads via Nickelodeon UK’s website. I’d love to own this poor, canceled cartoon, but it’s one of those series that seems to have gotten a home video release of “uhh here’s 5 random episodes on this disc, 5 others on this one, we’re not doing any more than that.” Dang.

I dunno. The fact that April O’Neil’s weapon of choice is a shillelagh is really goddamn funny.

It’s funny for me having a quasi “insider” view on that show because my wife works for Nickelodeon. I remember seeing early announcements (like before they became public) and thinking it was so cool, but also knowing that purists and redditors were going to probably hate it.

Also I just can’t help but assume kids these days are pretty apathetic to TMNT in general.

From what I was told it was a real flop as far as the bean-counters were concerned. But probably the best thing they’ve done with the franchise in years.

God what a bummer. It’s such a fun cartoon, of course it wasn’t meant to be :frowning:

Over the weekend I finished watching the last few seasons of Adventure Time and I suppose I’m more or less happy with how they turned out. I want to watch those Distant Lands episodes on HBO Max to see if I can wring any more closure out of it.

Then I guess I’ll finally sit down and start watching Steven Universe for real.

The best cat ownership comic is getting an anime

YES

That first enormous season’s a slog, but I’m pretty happy with everything from the season midpoint onward, and I don’t really support skipping episodes like some fans suggest, with maybe only one exception. (And trust me: you’ll know it when you see it.) Still some of my favorite TV I’ve ever watched.

Wait, what’s the exception? I haven’t watched in quite a while, but there’s a few episodes I would personally skip

There are plenty of episodes I don’t like and don’t plan to rewatch, but I figure if somebody doesn’t have a positive reaction to Uncle Grandpa, they’re not missing out if they skip it.

OH! You’re right, I totally erased that episode from my memory.

it’s a little annoying that a cartoon that probably still holds up quite well makes such a useful shorthand for facile media analysts

It’s not the cartoon’s fault that a loud plurality of the fandom is self-infantilizing theater kids. At this point, I consider the cartoon a casualty of that particular culture war.

I know it primarily by its fandom reputation so y’all praising it is a trip

Yeah, I liked Steven Universe a lot too. It’s like a really sentimental take on Dragon Ball.
