x-men 97 has good writing and cool fights and it did make me look up if jubilee as an american would be saying the word “bestie” in 1997. (probably not but not impossible)
Saying “besties” as a proclamation of friendship, yes. Describing a person as a bestie, ok. Addressing someone as bestie like it’s a nickname, definitely not in 97
I too am distressed to find it is actually good. And also there’s nothing heterosexual about these redesigns.
i really do think part of the appeal of x-men 97 is that the thing that the 90s x-men cartoon is: a kids show mosty starring adults, soap opera melodorama, theatrical political speeches about politics and philosophy, an action cartoon that takes itself mostly seriously, to have all these elements together in one cartoon is actually a novelty today.
AND THEN to actually just nail the tone of the original, just picking up exactly where it left off and adjusting the tone from TV-Y7 to TV-PG which basically just puts it in line with the actual comics it was adapting is a pretty good trick. it’s still kinda ugly when characters are standing still but it’s honestly amazing how this is not just season 6 but like “the show you remember in your head”.
would you recommend someone watch it without having seen x-men 92-96?
the show is somewhat built for newcomers, but it is a very specific earnest and corny tone combined with relationships that have developed over years and occasional callbacks to extremely convoluted plots. if you have existing affinity for the characters in other media it’s a definite yes. otherwise i think watching the first episode will tell you if you can get into it.
you can get a pretty good idea of the old show from this
tbh this sums up what i expect/want X-Men to be in general! which tbf my fondness for X-Men is 90% from the 90s show
These are the eps they recommend being familiar with for context, but I really don’t get the impression you’re missing out on much, and honestly it’s a rough revisit.
i don’t believe in respectability politics or that it’s impossible to do a fun comedy about hoodrat shit or that all black sitcoms have to be about happy middle class families who don’t say the n-word but this is like a cartoon the FBI invented
a case where the incredibly stacked voice cast just becomes depressing. surely there is a better use of jb smoove than this
Why is it a 2001 newgrounds flash
Incredibly ignoble posthumous credit for Norman Lear too, damn
I have to say given that I have Disney on 24/7 for Mia, I have really warmed up to Kiff and Big City Greens. They both tickle my funny bone.
Watched the first three episodes of Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water while on a mild edible last night. I loved it! How come I never hear anybody talking about this anime? It has that classic 80’s/90’s childrens anime charm where the characters just jump from one lavishly animated quirky cartoon vehicle to the next. The love of silly gadgets is so strong in this one.
Real blue skies classic sega vibes too, seems like the Dreamcast may have never existed if it weren’t for this show.
As I recall, Nadia winds up having the typical storytelling problems of 80s/90s TV: it needs to fill time for 52 episodes without using up too much budget and also without plot developments that might disorient viewers who missed some of the episodes. It starts off strong but I got bored and stopped watching it somewhere between eps 10-30.
Later Gainax projects decided to strike out into more unconventional directions that proved better suited for the binge-watching era.
