Cartoons (Part 2)

,

The other CSM anime discourse that I’m seeing is the adaption is playing it a little to close to the source. I don’t completely disagree. I was hoping for a more original take on the material to be something new for the format change. Granted, CSM doesn’t really come into its own till the back half so I’m still hopeful for more experimental visuals. What we have so far does look good and moves good but so far in a fairly standard way. Some one compared it to an MCU style polish and I get what their saying. The OP and EDs tease more strongly at what I was hoping for. I know this was an explosive hit for Kodansha so I expected the anime would probably play it safe but I hoped for a happy medium between the original comics energy and a clean high production anime visual fest.

There was also a tweet from Fujimoto’s editor that he has been very hands on with planning, composition, scripting, and storyboarding which I have to readings on. Either Mappa roped him in so they could cut down on staff or having him so close is making it difficult to do anything new.

So Lupin Part VII was a failed pilot that takes place in the future but now the REAL part VII takes place in the past is exactly the silly continuity I want from this franchise.

New episode of To Your Eternity was fantastic. I didn’t dislike the last arc as much as other people but they’re really firing on all cylinders here. I’ve always liked because of how much of a blank slate Fushi is, everything he experiences is their only baseline for how the series goes but they do a great job of remaining refreshing and finally holding onto the conceit of the first episode.

Urusei Yatsura was fine but not enough to watch another episode, never mind 51, mob psycho still mob psycho, spy family still spy family, curious to see where chainsaw man goes from here and as predicted akiba maid wars wasn’t interesting enough to sustain a second episode.

I anticipate this will be my reaction to the new series. The original is an all around masterpiece and I can’t imagine that the new series can compare, especially given it is produced by such a c list studio

I dont like what I’ve seen of the original outside of nice sequences in some of the movies but you can really tell its not sustainable there, will probably get renewed as well.

I’ve seen the first two episodes of new Yatsura. It’s decent and it does reasonable justice to the original series, but I’d call it inessential so far. I’ve been having fun with it though and will continue watching. It’s very much better than I expected it to be.

It’s certainly stylish. While the original show frequently felt like an animator’s show, it tended to flex in a sort of low-key way. This one is much more in-your-face, with big bright colors and complex moving patterned backgrounds to emphasize characters’ outbursts. It feels a lot louder on the whole.

The new show is also moving a lot faster than the old. They’re introducing a new core character with each episode – Sakura in 2 and Mendou in 3. It seems like they’re going to cut out all the filler the old show used to revel in… But that filler was some of the best filler in all of anime.

I am now through the first three seasons of Steven Universe by I think all standards (the episode order/which eps go in which seasons seems to not be settled which is rather odd) and it is still pretty good. Season 3 was a bit up and down in its first half as they seemed to get bored with all the late season 2 threat build-up and blew through its resolution in a pair of episodes early on, plus they made up for no Beach City eps for a bit by running several in a row with little if any gem involvement which felt like it knocked the pacing all akimbo, but when the eps were on the landed very well.

I am unsure if knowing where the pink diamond/rose quartz stuff is mainly going (not the details but the main bit) is gonna affect my experience much moving forward, but at the least it let’s me know to keep my eyes on certain things. Looking at old reddit posts and man people sure did love arguing about what’s going on with those two back then.

one of the bigger problems the show had overall was condensing big plot stuff into short runtimes, the pacing gets very strange whenever they want to tie up an arc. the cluster is the biggest offender i can remember in that regard
