Cartoons 3: The Animation

Been watching Arcane, mainly curious about the style and animation techniques. I think the actual plot and tone are a bit too tragedy-porn and mopey for me. Nearly finished with Season 1 and not sure I’ll give s2 a try. I feel like there’s more interesting things I could be watching despite the incredible effort the animators are putting in.

Arcane is a fascinating case of amazing production and taking a source media with a wide array of characters and flavors and making the world seem smaller and more boring than it should be. S2 has some interesting wrinkles but get ironed over so the fantasy doesn’t get to fantastic.

Why does the ED for My One-Hit Kill Sister go so hard??

I was just lying on my bed “practicing my Japanese listening skills” on random Crunchyroll-recommended slop when the show blindsided me with this intense psychodrama. (The rest of the show so far is exactly what the title makes it sound like)

I saw three or four eps of that show and it was in on the joke enough to be entertaining and had some fun expresive animation with such a limited budget. That and ED felt like the studio got to have a little fun with the garbage.

i liked it better when stuff wasn’t all just metacommentary on video game tropes

what does ED stand for

It’s the ending

I think people liked how op was two letters so they don’t just want to say end

Erectile Dysfunction. Broco is asking how it can still be hard if it has erectile dysfunction.

thats the reason i asked all i know ED as is what you said and eating disorder!!! the fact that it’s just END is making me livid omg

YOU CAN JUST SAY END. WHAT’S WRONG WITH CREDITS

It did cross my mind to write out “ending animation” there, but then I remembered the time I mentioned “chuunibyou” on this forum and thought it might be so obscure that I linked the wikipedia article for it, and wound up getting more bloodpotions than link clicks

Anyway I’m pretty sure the reason “ED” sounds like a strange choice is that it’s made-in-Japan English. That sometimes takes the form of new “acronyms”, often using only two letters since there is much less semantic collision in the context of Japanese (another common one is “OL” for “office lady”). Then anime fans worldwide started saying “ED” too, because you run into it all the time if you look up anime soundtracks.

And I do think there would something lost by saying “credits” actually. “ED” implies the credits are paired with an animation showcase, typically in a melancholic or peaceful key.

someone go tell Japan that ED is taken by two things that are definitely not accompanied with peaceful music :stampstampstamp: all initalisms are actually bad to me for this reason. I have to go through the up to a dozen completely wrong things before figuring it out!!! it takes way longer for me to get it than for anyone to type it and I will continue perishing on this hill whenever one of you says some shit like ED or AC

AC is always armored core for me because I don’t know why anyone would talk about air conditioners or assassin’s creed enough to turn them into acronyms

The one that gets me is STG, I know it means shmup, but what specifically do the S, T and G stand for? Shoot The Guns? ShooTing Game?

I have always read it as the latter, ShooTing Game makes sense to me as a sort of jp approach to abbreviation

i like STG solely cuz it’s not shmup
