what a rubbish last post, sorry
don’t worry, it’s a good Cliffhanger post, nothing to be ashamed about.
Like idk,

or so
I thought it was fun to end on the Conan canon conundrum
Speaking of rubbish, Fixed is a strong worst of the decade contender.
I changed the thread title to “Cartoons 3: The Animation” but am open to other ideas. I skipped the Evangelion one just cuz we already had a thread riffing on that before.
Master Thread Cartoons the IIIrd
I had noticed that Pokey the Penguin had a new animated adventure out for a while and finally watched it
the entire thing feels off-model, on brand. I love it
bit curious about long short story honestly, even if i never entirely got on with bojack
I caught the first episode from Long Story Short because Netflix had the subtitles in Catalan AND Galician. That is a first, even Disney+ offers only Catalan, and that was dubbed only for specific movies like Turning Red along with Flemish. So far, so good. Very dialogue driven, almost more than Daria and King of the Hill.
Edit: First episode had a few posters in one room for Sub Pop, Pavement, and The Smashing Pumpkins under names like Sum Bop, Asphalt, and Stupendous Eggplants. Cute details.
Another reminder to be thankful that it doesn’t look like this. This is the most Jewish American Experience cartoon that I have seen. Like, you could have the same writers make Jerry Seinfeld, Mel Brooks, or Woody Allen jokes into a cartoon and it would feel on point. It needs a Yiddish dub to seal the deal. There are a few Yiddish words in the dialogue.
this show is exactly and precisely as entertaining as tuca and bertie
uncanny
I wasn’t expecting to hear Crazy Town - Butterfly in Episode 9. They already renewed this for another season next year. I’m looking forward to it. Maybe they are going to explore more Jen’s and Hannah’s dynamic. They brought it up in the last episode.
this season (I think it’s technically a cours) of Dandadan has been very good. this show rules, it’s very jojo in the best way
literally 100% of the anime I watch these days is on Netflix which is funny because that would make me terminally middlebrow if true of any other genre but I think the way they choose to invest in Edgerunners and this and Dungeon Meshi just happens to align perfectly with my tastes
I’ve been thinking about IGPX ever since I came across this video. They aired it at a time I wasn’t paying any attention to Cartoon Network beyond Adult Swim. I know the story and the cast are pish. I’m more stoked to see it, because it is an 2005 co-produced anime from Toonami and Production I.G. doing early to mid '00s CGI shite.
What really has sold me on this is the OST, which is entirely licensed music from Ninja Tune artists. There are two versions, the Toonami one which kept all the licensed music, and the Japan / Production I.G. version, with slightly longer episodes, but as the series got to its second half, they use less Ninja Tunes, in favour of original orchestral pieces. Fuck that, you’re watching the Toonami version at my house. I don’t think these are all the songs you hear in the series, but the ones I recognise from their playlists, I can vouch about.
This series, Boogiepop Phantom, and that Manga Entertainment dub of Fist of the North Star, that got cut short by the 36th episode with licensed songs from Reinforced Records, are still the only anime I know that eschews BGM and traditional OST composers to get licensed artists instead. I know some Manga Entertainment dubs did this to movies, like, Space Adventure Cobra (with Yello!) or the 1994 Street Fighter II movie, but seeing it in series is rare.
Supposedly Andy Frain met up Buichi Terasawa in a meeting. He wore thick dark sun glasses while smoking. Flat out told him right to his face, “Are you the person who changed the music to the Cobra movie?” (Paraphrased) He looked very menacing, Andy was just about to shit on his trousers when he said yes. Buichi took another smoke to reply: “Well, I liked it.” Whew. lad. I don’t often agree for changing music in anime, but I do have fondness for those Manga Entertainment versions like the Cyber City Oedo 808 English soundtrack.

It’s basically a spiritual Bob’s burgers spinoff, some times I think it has surpassed it but other times I feel it’s still not quite as good.
I’m really sad about this shit, because their series and adaptations are made with good voice acting here. Both the Tintin and Rupert cartoons from them were staples of Brazilian childhood.
I remember watching this series as it aired, and wanting to like it far more than I did; I just felt really let down by the plotting, which didn’t seem to be trying much of anything.
I still remember that one of the episode titles was “I Like You, I Like You, I Love You”, which really struck my fancy back then.
