Rebecca Sugar’s directing a new moomin film
HOLY FUKKIN SHIT
march-april of next year . . .
Finally watched “Marge vs. The Monorail.” Man, Conan O’Brien and Phil Hartman: what a combo.
have been watching some seasonal anime
turkey!
a friend recommended this one on bsky. pretty fun sports anime about bowling that ends up being sort of a high-concept sci-fi story about time travel . it’s super dumb and i’m having a great time
gachiakuta
other people have mentioned this one upthread. really like the aesthetics, reminds of like, soul eater. i would’ve gone insane over this as a teen. even though i’m actually interested in the story, i’m holding myself from reading the comics to know what happens
yano-kun no futsuu no hibi
not super interesting, but the main characters are cuties
ruri rocks
certified freaks only. some scenes have a level of detail in the animation that is downright pornographic. these people know what they are doing
food court de mata ashita
Genuinely Funny one. whole thing revolves around the two main characters talking for the whole duration of the episodes, so it surprised me to know the writing is compelling enough to carry it all. something about the way the characters talk feels true to life. also best OP of the year, maybe
CITY: THE ANIMATION (hors concours given that its the greatest cartoon of all time)
am trying to watch it but the lady with the dump truck and ludicrous bosom is not delivering on rock facts. why did she not mention the eccentric boulder in the stream, or schedule a breast reduction. that garnet pool should have been under a waterfall to explain how they were deposited & not washed away, but the pebbles would have been covered by similarly dense sand
fear I am the wrong kind of freak for this show. spent a good 5 minutes trying to remember ‘moé’ and ‘japanese exceptionalism’
rewatched like half of gauche the cellist a few weeks ago. feels like one of the few anime that gets musicians right, conductors included
compare and contrast w liz and the blue bird. the way nozomi’s lips are parted at 0:22
also thinking about this bit from the sentimental graffiti opening mv
rewatched most of The Hakkenden a few months ago. great repository of chaotic animation and uncanny nightmare feelings.
hamaji’s resurrection is the best, everyone has already said all the things about it. i like the realism. prominent aniblogger compares the rotoscope qualities of okiura and ohira’s animation- i think another part of it/the ep’s approach generally is how much more opaque characters’ behaviours become when they’re not drawn in ideal shapes (while somehow capturing just the right/wrong details).
on the mention of takashi nakamura’s ep (#4) i also liked Catnapped
To Heart s1 is so good
also. i finally watched mitsuo iso’s ep of Rahxephon. rly lovely, feels like a prototype for dennoh coil in a lot of ways: its got the same wistfulness, humor, tactile worldbuilding, sense for the mystery of childhood experience
also also watched some eps of Sengoku Collection, its mid, sorry, u cant make Seraphim Call w/out someone as smart as tomomi mochizuki at the helm. i think its cute how ep18 tries to halfass its way to an arthouse look but that’s about it. funny anime michael moore in the Bowling for Columbine ep
i can see myself coming around to this one i just like being mean to cartoons
love to see this post celebrating great animation
fionna and cake is still good and i guess i don’t mind there being infinite adventure time as long as it’s not as much of a slog as some of the back half of the original show
Visually and musically remastered from the original BETACAM master in 2022, this video directed by Koji Morimoto won MTV Europe’s ‘Dance Video of The Year’ in 1996.
Video remastered and optimized by Martijn Adema (Vision Impossible) and music remastered by Ken Ishii.A milestone in techno history, Ken Ishii’s iconic ‘Extra’ arrives digitally for the first time since its groundbreaking physical release on R&S Records 30 years ago. A landmark release with visionary remixes from Luke Slater, Dave Angel and Wagon Christ (AKA Luke Vibert). The Koji Morimoto directed music video went on to win MTV Europe’s Best Dance Music Video in 1997, cementing ‘Extra’ as a defining moment in electronic music.
Caught this in IMAX and can not stop thinking about it.
seriously wondering for a while now if 2025 is the year of Kenshi, a duet with Utada, “Sayonara Mata Itsuka” and a big Box Office tentpole release, what else can you ask for ![]()
Did a binge watch on a show from last season. Clevatess: The King of Magical Beasts, the Baby, and the Corpse Hero is novel enough to engage me. It’s a pure fantasy romp. No isekai and no aggressive video gamey world systems. The most video game part is the title and aesthetics of Heros/Yuusha is played with but most of the power level stuff is just a person being anime strong and there a magic stones doing stuff. Real clean stuff and doesn’t shy from cartoon violence. Would be a solid fit for Adult Swim era stuff.
