C H A O S

aw, nuts. yeah, it does seem to be happening a lot. i feel like i keep hearing it has something to do with DX12?

i will say that this one review i saw that recommended playing on the better resolution mode has no idea what they’re talking about. game looks and plays like garbage on the Series X in that mode, whereas performance mode is really smooth and crisp with hiccups only when there is a loooooot going on

$20 says this was a PS3 game they just forgot to release at the time. Think about it—it would explain an awful lot

They have said the concept for this game has been kicking around Square-Enix since Dissidia.

Wait this game is about a bunch of ripped dudes who all became friends because they have crystals that glow when they “hang out?” Where have I heard this story before

Based on the trajectory of Revengeance, I’ m guessing this game will be fertile ground for memes for the next decade.

I played about 25 minutes of this game before cello practice today and it’s like a fever dream. It was like playing 5 minutes of 5 completely different games. Everybody says a lot of dialogue but seemingly not to each other or about the same thing. You talk to people from a random menu and everyone is called like Jimothany and they wish you good luck on whatever your quest is and dress like people trying to steal as much clothing from Hot Topic as possible by wearing it all out of the store. There’s a montage in a field of wheat to My Way by Sinatra presaging the combat tutorial. I think this is like a video game version of the Yellow King and just looking at it has made me less sane

Update:

I’ve beat the first boss of this game on action difficulty and this game is truly bonkers hard—it took about 20 tries. At the moment I’m trying to wrap my head around the combat system which has three kinds of ways to avoid attacks, three different gauges to keep track of, three distinct ways to execute special moves, a single button job toggle that changes your entire load out and also acts like an action cancel, and party member command buttons to get them to do stuff. This game uses every button on the controller and it uses them all liberally all the time. Bosses and enemies are fast and aggressive and some of them basically teleport around and switch aggro at the drop of a hat. It’s a lot to remember all the time.

The first dungeon is already goth as hell and features more outfit changes than your higher budget variety of drag show. My partner went for a run and I’d already completely changed outfits twice by the time they got back.

Putting on my game dev hat the game has some really odd weaknesses relating to its asset reuse, post-effects and character tech—sometimes there are inexplicably low poly environment assets (likely from FFXIV) which look very out of place. Post-fx use old style FXAA which is pretty jaggy and a non-physically correct depth of field that can be really hard to look at and is not screen space stable. Character hair lacks AO causing it too look flat and “painted in” and sometimes the normals aren’t great, while character eyes lack shadow or tearline geometry and proper pupil displacement causing them to appear flat and glassy. Squeenix usually pays really close attention to this stuff so it’s a shame they didn’t push harder for it here (aside from the asset reuse, this is less a time or budget thing than a studio know-how thing, btw).

But it’s fun! Really fun. It often feels like a game from 2012 in the best way possible. It’s big stupid nonsense and does not care who knows it

Realizing this is a hard action game that I probably can’t old man handle it.

It has a story mode that’s apparently significantly easier! Cubes for all!

It’s funny, I’m hesitant to pick up any new games as I always have serious doubts as to how my base PS4 would be able to handle them… but with this game I just go “yeah this should be no problem”. It’s apparently much rougher than other versions but when they all look rough it seems silly to worry about it that much.

as folks have been saying, if you choose to play on story difficulty you can just kill chaos faster, which jack would approve of. also cuts out a lot of the bullshit he wouldn’t want to deal with

WHAT IS ANY OF THIS

It’s the FFXIV dungeon Sastasha!

I dunno what most of the other stuff is, but that’s what the place is and guess that’s why it’s dimension 13

It’s weird how directly they copied the assets since that is some of the oldest stuff in FFXIV

it means it’s probably pirates

the stage in SOP is almost identical to Sastasha up until the miniboss in it (which also happens to be the first boss from the FFXIV dungeon)
