Facts, as someone who has spent nearly 100 hours with Nioh 1, I wasn’t worried when I saw the Origin trailer. Yes, it looked awful but if you’ve played Nioh then you have no worries whatsoever that the final version of Origin is going to be shit hot.
I played nioh for ~150 hours probably and I don’t think it ever occurred to me to recommend it to anyone
what are the biggest differences between nioh 1 and nioh 2? I haven’t played either and didn’t realize they were so distinct
In short, Nioh 2 has a lot more variety (Weapons, enemies, levels) and allows you to create your own character. In 1 You play a historical figure who is voiced.
Personally I enjoyed Nioh 1 a lot and found that I couldn’t stomach Nioh 2’s length. I’m not a fan of the loot system but don’t mind doing my taxes and just using the custom options to reduce The burden of picking up so much stuff.
They are easily the best Souls-like alternative to the Souls series mainly because the combat is more involved.
If this game is just more Nioh and of comparable length then that may actually put me off it unless my backlog severely diminishes by the time it comes out.
for me:
a) nioh 2 has a character creator.
b) after seriously bouncing off the first game, seeing it as a miserable and cynical take on the souls game’s difficulty, something in my head clicked with the second game to just approach it as a character action and/or loot game, and it’s a really good one of those.
if i went back to the first game, i would probably appreciate it more now, but i think the second game made it totally irrelevant.
loved nioh in spite of the ‘loot’ because collecting cat and dog friends + going through a ritual of applying a dozen different buff/debuffs at the start of a fight is all i want out of life really
Nioh 1 is just systems on top of systems on top of systems which makes it probably the most cheeseable soulslike given the amount of customization within the game.
My first Dark Souls experience was running down to Blighttown to pick up a giant club and have a blast fucking shit up
My first Nioh experience was spent getting wrecked by the first boss for 20 hours
so I’m not sure I agree with it being most cheesable, at least not right out the gate
(edit: it may not be clear from this post but I love nioh anyway)
I have real excitement for CHAOS simply because it’s more Nioh. Nioh is not better than the souls games, but it’s a great series in its own right. I abhor extremely long games, but somehow I enjoyed spending way too many hours in both Nioh titles.
Nioh 1 is the most repetitive thing ever but I also found the story interesting in a way that 2 wasn’t. I def played more of Nioh 1 than I should have
I really enjoyed Nioh 1, every decision to move away from Souls was an affront to god but it still sticked the landing thanks to some phenomenal level design (and kusarigamas)
Loot vomit was the obvious worst flaw of that game and seeing it in FFO 2 games later means that Ninja Theory will never learn and they’ll follow the same template for 15 years
There’s an alternate universe in which Team Ninja has a modicum of faith in their vision and told everyone who has complained about breakable weapons in Nioh 1’s alpha to piss off. In that universe, the COVID-19 pandemic never happened
Sad to learn this is a nioh. Was hoping to mash square to do my 4 hit combo over and over and then sometime press triangle for variety
I’ve been playing through Nier Automata lately and yes please, more character action games should have fancy animation and only a bare minimum of combat options if I wanted to play fighting games I would
omg yes now let me punch a moogle in the face
Breakable weapons fucking rock
The loot game is probably what’s keeping me hooked to Nioh 2 in addition to the great combat (kusarigamas all day), so I’m surprised nobody likes it here. But yeah, I’m coming at it from a different angle. I think that ARPG mashup with souls-like gameplay is really brilliant. Also the combat makes you feel like you’re commanding a fighter jet with all the inputs and ki recovery you have to perform
Also like it was mentioned the game has Content with a capital C. It’s way too much.
I’m telling you SE needs to make a b-tier JRPG shooter based on the battle system of Episode Prompto and The Third Birthday.
