Satoshi Kon passed 10 years ago yesterday. Planning to either binge watch Paranoia Agent for the nth time or get into his movies, maybe Perfect Blue as the “blurring lines between acting/reality” premise makes me think of late Lynch, like Mulholland Drive/Inland Empire or even Abel Ferrara’s Dangerous Game, sort of a fever dream behind-the-scenes pseudo-documentary of Bad Lieutenant

Perfect Blue is a little more of the blurring line between your personal identity and the identity that people perceive you as. As well as just an indictment of idol culture in general.

I haven’t seen Millennium Actress yet but I think that’s a little more about acting/reality boundaries.

Saw Tokyo Godfathers in theaters a few weeks before the lock down happened. Not as cerebral but does have a few good messages that it’s serious about telling.

Ooo, good to know. Such a huge body of work. Also animated Roujin Z which might have been my first anime via the Sci-Fi Channel? Beautiful soundtrack too.

Huh, was thumbing through Opus just yesterday. Good stuff.

rewatched paranoia agent not to long ago. still holds up. i have yet to actually get through a viewing of perfect blue but that’s not because it’s a bad movie. it’s just triggering for me. tokyo godfathers could be added to the list of things to watch if you haven’t seen it. fantastic work on every level.

i’m not sure if i got all that much out of paranoia agent back when i first watched it, but i guess the beginning had me fired up for more of a concrete detective thriller, and … it wasn’t that, lol

paranoia agent is interesting because i think it wound up being more of a critique on society and the criminal justice system from context of being japanese. it’s still applicable to other places in the world and that’s why it probably gets so much praise ( kon was a master after all ) and the surrealism and psychological elements are why i like it so much.

let’s enjoy the opening theme as a treat:

Susumu Hirasawa/head of P-Model did the soundtrack, liked watching him operate his one-man-band rig from that era

THREAD RESURRECTION

Any of y’all watching Sonny Boy it’s pretty neat I guess.

I got about 5 or 6 in when I was keeping up with it as it released. I mostly like it but feels a bit to subdued for me at times. Need to go back to it.

digimon 2020 is a good remake/reboot whatever the right term is i dont care enough

last year I watched the entirety of the original run of Sailor Moon

the first three seasons are great! the last two were soul-draining wastes of time.

mainly the thing I like about it is that every character not only has a canonical zodiac sign (corresponding to their guardian planet in the case of the sailor scouts) but are very accurately written accordingly. I love that kind of attention to detail.

has anyone watched crystal? I’ve heard a lot of bad things.
