the hamster cage had variations but i think the birdcage is the only item that allows you to personally customize an alive (non sapient) animal to meet your aesthetics. the house “pets” are weird. i have all these ant farms and sea monkeys and whatnot i’m never gonna use and then there’s a doghouse with no dog and tons of cat toys with no cat. at least the turtle kinda moves

I feel better about there being sort of a counterbalance to this in that you can have little humans from Japanese folklore living inside your furniture (Momotaro in the peach surprise box, Kaguya in the bamboo doll)

I forgot I told Hugh that! I want to uncover the mannequin mystery. That garden is gorgeous and motivates me to do something aesthetically pleasing with shrubs.
Speaking of Bella and minor gripes with the game, since I got her early on and Nintendo wanted to keep your earliest villagers’ home development relative to your early-game camp-dwelling basic-DIY furnishings she is stuck with a generic wooden theme interior
When this is what her house actually is supposed to look like fully furnished and more or less reflective of her wild metalhead-mouse personality.
The poor things are stuck with wood theme forever and they don’t put down more than two pieces of gifted furniture and no flooring or wallpaper at all no matter what you give them
