Also, you know, you can’t sell an OST CD comprised of historical music. Cause it’s not O.
justice monsters v is tight as a kite
game rules
fishing rules, too
I take back every bad thing I said about this game. I love it. It just eats up time so easily. I’m on Chapter 2 and I’m running off to find car wax. I need to finish Tomb Raider so I can play this game with a clear conscience.
going on record here saying that I honestly wouldn’t say I like X, but.
#listenToMyStory
I’ve played it about 2.5 times. More than I’ve played any other FF, some of which I’d actually like!
First time was when it came out, and I was left a bit underwhelmed of the whole experience. After a while, and thinking about it for quite a while, I could decide that it was, at least, not horrible. Had some nice tunes, and one or two cool moments (no, not the tidus laughs moment. definitely not. The ordeals thing was nicely done!)
Second time round was … phew, around 2006? There I realized the overarching plot-thing that’s going on, and went for the pro-sphaerobard, where I realized too late that you could force lulu to be a tank and yuna to be a blackish red-mage. Also “got” some of the tracks in the bgm that are pretty forgettable if you don’t pay attention.
Game got upgraded to “pretty OK, if lacking”
and iirc, some years ago, replaying it for a SQEX-week, this time gunning for exploiting the spheroboard and changing everyones’ jobs as much as possible. Got killed as rikku after a while, and left it at that.
still consider it being OK, maybe a bit cool in spite of itself, but … idk why I’ve played it more than once.
… let's see how XV fares then! (one thing I've noted: I feel more and more like it's an advantage having seen Kingsglaive before, can someone say a word or two how some things, e.g. sth being said in the radio, come across without prior movie-experience?)
ok having spent more time with it.
WHAT is this battle system?
Like how can you be good or bad at it?
There isn’t really positioning because your team just… runs around and gets shot. You can barely choose where you are with auto aim randomly switching targets not even choosing the closest via camera so you’ll suddenly run across the field.
You’re attack output is either hold or jam the attack button.
You can bring up items.
You can choose attacks via your team.
You can’t get the sniper guy even to dodge, ever.
Like I’m clearly bad at this, but I don’t understand where I have a chance to input things to make choices. This is a contender for the worst battle system in any video game ever.
Enable wait mode, you can select your target with the right stick. R1/RB to scan an enemy and discover their weaknesses/resistances. Pick a target strategically (for instance, prioritize snipers, or high-damage/low-HP enemies) and warp strike them (R1/RB+Triangle/Y).
1H sword/daggers are good for normal, single enemies. For armored targets, use a spear. Greatsword or magic for large groups.
Also don’t forget about your bros’ techniques. Ignis’s first ascension-purchasable technique, Regroup, is one of the most useful things ever. For two tech bars, he stops the battle for a moment, everyone warps to him and heals up fully, so long as they’re not dead. Prompto’s “Starshell” comes in handy, too. Focus a target in wait mode and use it and he’ll fire a flare towards the enemy which will peel the enemy’s attention off you and onto the flare, so you can get around behind them for blindside attacks.
You really shouldn’t have skipped the tutorial tbh.
i guess? But I do select targets, I mean I appreciate the break down. But this isn’t really new info? Ya you see the weakness, but when you go and hit them, then you’re in the fray and you’re jumping from target to target even if you don’t want to.
Also ya. You get to leave ONE ability on your support guys at a time. Really?
Also I have locked onto enemies then done warp strike and ended up in random places despite having just locked onto them.
Not trying to take it out on anyone here, just kinda frustrated with it.
Hold R1/RB to lock onto one target, or hold R1/RB and then click the right stick for a hands-free perma-lock
You can only have one equippable tech per character at a time, but you can expand their other abilities in the Teamwork tree with a bunch of stuff they’ll just do without being asked.
Some people play tennis. I dissect jrpg systems.
I like X
X was my intro to Hamauzu, so I’m thankful for it for that
KZ ☄️ (KZXcellent)
The battle system works okay when there are a few targets, but anything over three and it just becomes a mess.
The weapons actually have move sets and moving your stick while in certain stages of your combo triggers certain finishers.
None of this is explained, but I’m having fun with it now?
Side-story: went out to kill a hunt mark that only spawns at night. On the way was ambushed by multiple iron giants and arachne, who then spawned extra spiders. By the time I’d managed to kill one iron giant the game had spawned two more. It was pretty cool. I ran away because I was worried the fight would last till the sun came up before I got a chance to kill the thing I was supposed to kill.
None of this is explained
Except in the tutorial
It doesn’t explain the movesets in the tutorial, actually. You can do stuff like Gladio’s Tempest with Noctis but it’s never mentioned anywhere as far as I can tell.
The tutorial provides the most basic of explanations. I couldn’t figure out how to get half of this stuff to trigger until I watched detailed YouTube videos breaking down each weapon type’s combo trees, and even then noctis won’t do them 100% of the time.
i dont like ff10 because it’s terribly boring to play. When 13 came out and people complained that it was just running down a pretty hallway and doing the same series of motions in every random battle i was like “oh so they just made 10 again huh”.
The little timeline that shows you who’s going to move next is another thing that no subsequent (turn-based) jrpg has any damn excuse not to have copied, though.

FF, imo
The thing about 13’s linear design is that most of the places you run through are like ribbons of techno-baroque graphic design turned into open-air arcades. This is distinctly unlike 10, where despite the general linearity it feels like you’re traversing actual places
