ACTION 5 NEWS with Chuck Scarsdale

tell me you wouldn’t watch that reality show though. if they don’t get Romo’s likeness to put this mode in the next Madden then I’ll just make it in Twine and it’ll be fucking hysterical

yeah i don’t necessarily have any insights on whether this will be good or bad for indie devs, it’s just that that quote really stood out to me. a lot about this feels like a bad essay or someone unqualified trying to sound smart at a job interview. ultimately if the team under this person is good, i guess it could be fine

dunkeys whole platform for publishing is ‘I play so many games that I know what a good game is so I won’t release any bad games’

so if you believe this and have the same shitty taste as dunkey it’s a good thing. I’m sure lots of children are happy

Dunkey previously put out two videos criticizing game critics that game critics felt obliged to receive and yet his videos would have the same critical substance if muted

I’m sure he’ll lend a helping hand to some collectathon N64 platformer pastiche

i dunno, this is bad read. the venture sounds like he’s just leveraging his massive clout to expand his portfolio beyond youtube videos, which honestly seems like a miserable job long term. also he’s probably just bored and can do whatever he wants at this point.

i understand the sour grapes that the youtube comedian gamer has 100x more clout, popularity, and money than most game makers, but this is just business. he’s gonna land on his feet no matter what and the first few games he signs are probably gonna do fine purely based on the inertia surrounding him.

he is annoying though

hahaha i wanted everyone to look it up and see what i meant by TERRIBLE

there are videos of him not using the voice so it pisses me off a little extra

i mean, i do think he probably is starting the company out of boredom/having the money and probably there’s no more reasoning to it than that.

but also someone who helped start GWU and has been involved with labor stuff “that is just business” is usually not an acceptable reason for me to like… ignore all the potential implications and bad things that that implies

my issues are talked about more here:

i’m also just so tired of debating with people about this stuff so i might just leave it with this post.

do i think dunkey specifically is really the problem here? not really no - i mean beyond the fact that he is someone with lots of money and a big audience. i think it’s indicative of a larger space that’s already unfriendly to devs. there’s already been discourse online about the kinds of ridiculously bad contracts out there that have become standard for a lot of indie publishers now and the only reason we don’t see more is people don’t want to get blacklisted and ruin future opportunities. someone who is a big influencer with a huge audience that can now be leveraged against devs is like… not a great situation. regardless of whether his company is okay to work with or not.

some people will be like “well that’s what you get, what do you expect” (not attributing this to you just a general sentiment i see in the wild) but i think that’s a shitty attitude in general. as someone who is an artist and is friends with so many different people trying to exist in the space and are really struggling… there are so many different factors conspiring against people trying to eke out a living doing these kinds of things so i have a lot of respect for those people who are able to do it. especially the ones who don’t already come from money (which do exist, i promise). and so much of the work i’ve done and things i believe are in repudiation to people who say/believe this kind of work doesn’t matter and doesn’t affect things.

so yeah i do believe this stuff matters and is part of a general landscape that more people should be informed about. and the attitude that devs don’t deserve better that i see from a lot of games fans is like… sorry, you don’t deserve to consume the shit that you do if you believe in that. there is just a lack of awareness re: specifically the situation with indie publishers, and a general sense of hostility and cluelessness towards game devs and what they actually do (which you could see with the GTA leaks). which… at the end of the day, these are the people actually making the games that everyone plays. and big corporations and management are the ones leveraging sentiment against them constantly. so with big influencers with huge audiences becoming the managment too it’s like… such a bad situation overall. brings back a lot of bad gamergatery memories.

edit:
speaking of which, hope we’re all ready for much more of this if this is any indication

Remember when Dunkey said the N-word?

Personally, I think he’s a clown with a dogshit taste in games and a preening ego, so that puts him roughly on par with most publishing executives. But he also has a rabid fanbase of redditors and the internet-poisoned who think ASCII art games are for [insert slur of choice here], so if anything it’s even worse than someone like Activision. The power dynamics have way more potential for evil.

Also the idea that any one person has their finger on the pulse of gaming is laughable to me. People like Dunkey or Sseth may be able to move copies with their unfunny videos for Racist Teenagers, but as far as having good taste goes, or the ability to articulate what is interesting or desirable about a game, they fall significantly short of your average 8 y/o to me.

Perhaps I am simply too jaded! But seriously fuck these guys. I hope they go bankrupt.

yeah, those games he points out as ones he’s introduced so many people to were all ones with massively successful crowdfunding ventures that made many tens of thousands of dollars for the devs before he “put millions of eyes” on them. It’s like if some film twitter douchebag tried to take credit for Nope being successful.

Fairly sure that is an irony bit the tweeter is doing.

lol that’s what i get for not reading the quoted tweet

every time I think about yourtub monetization I get a sad feeling since it made playing videogames more a more viable career option than making games as long as you’re willing to be racist about it
