Would y’all recommend I enable the Japanese voice acting in Shenmue 1, or go with the English dub?
Japanese VA is really really good and the English VA is trying to emulate it.
I’m still very early in the game, but the two feel very different to me. It may be just that I don’t understand Japanese, but I find the original VA very naturalistic, while the English dub feels extremely goofy, weird, and dissociated. I can really be down with either, but which of these vibes better suits the game?
A big part of why the English feels goofy is that it has the same inflection as the Japanese dub a lot of the time.
I kinda stopped noticing the weirdness of it by the end?
But I’ve only played it in English.

I’ve only played it in English and it was almost 20 years ago but I have half those line readings seared into my brain and I can’t imagine playing it any other way

Alright I beat this game. Wow, this sure was boring and pointless! Nothing happened! Could you imagine the look on every gamer’s face if within 10 minutes of starting this game you meet Lan Di and he trips over and cracks his head open on the side of a rock and dies? Then the rest of the game could be about taking Shenhau home to Japan to meet your Mom or whatever and playing Virtua Fighter on your Saturn. You could have these minigame vignettes about getting through customs and buying omiyage for all your friends. What a fucking game!

i’m just here to say the 2019 shenmue 3 looks like a remaster of the 2003 shenmue 3 that exists in some other timeline. better graphics, everything else down to the menu fonts is exactly the same. very faithful remaster.
