turns out that watching a few of these videos means that I now (forever?) constantly talk to myself in (your host) the crafsman voice for only all of every waking hour

I think I’ve binged like twelve of these since watching this video.

this aspect ratio is making me reconsider things

Board games. I found this channel after learning about Conway’s Go/Phutball, it’s chill

this particular video is video game related but the rest of the channel isn’t so i’m putting it here

but a guy is doing pretty in depth research to put together videos about the past incarnations of the west edmonton mall, the hilarious and ridiculous landmark of the city i live in. it was once the biggest mall in the world.

anyway this video is about a gigantic video arcade that was in the mall from 2000 - 2004, i guess it is sort of like dave and busters before its time but it’s kind of interesting to see that early 2000’s twilight swan song of the video arcade experience.

there are lots of custom cabinets and immersive proto vr stuff. kinda interesting.

this channel uploads 4k60fps recordings of old videos from nico nico douga that have a lot of danmaku-style comments

i’ve linked a video by this guy before but he did another one that’s really great on the soul-crushing musical scoring of reality TV

a person who i was a film major with in college eventually got a job working as an editor for some reality tv show, and i feel like in his presence i made some comment about how soul crushing the aesthetic of reality tv was, expecting him to just be like “yeah it pays the bills but it’s hell” in response, but i feel like he was genuinely kind of offended and idk if i’ve ever fully recovered

there so many people who work in the tech industry (even at the shittiest possible jobs) like that. i remember joking about that website Upworthy when it was still around at some social gathering and a guy was like “i WISH i wrote for Upworthy!! they do very important work!!”. also that tech entrepreneur person i lived with who i’ve mentioned on here previously said without a trace of irony that Farmville was important because it “teaches people about agriculture”. i thought people who worked in reality tv might be a little more self-aware though. i guess a lot of people really become job zombies in order to justify what they’re doing.

yeah, i mean honestly i did feel kind of bad for just like openly mocking his career to his face. and i think he kind of knew what i was getting at, i guess i just overestimated his capacity for wry self deprecation lol. anyway i think he is working on like indie documentaries mostly now which is a lot easier for me to understand. i’m sure at least some people take those jobs thinking they’re going to use them to fuel their own more interesting personal projects and then end up just getting totally absorbed into the machine, or burnt out
