why does this, what should on paper be an otherwise throwaway “adult contemporary”-ish ballad, read so mysterious to me? it sounds so tense… does she believe in what she’s singing? there seems to be some force and conviction behind the words, but then… why are they so pained? a celebration of love’s abundance but with so much mention of thunder and lightning, a burning sun, silent to the life it supports. you’d expect the chorus to be more uplifting, not this continuous descent with funeral procession bells ringing out in the distance…
