started thinking about June of 44 out of the blue for whatever reason, and the one song i know of them because my older brother put it on a cassette mix he made in like 1998 or 1999 that he left behind

seems like they reformed in 2018

After all these years I still don’t really understand unicorn’s vibe. Sometimes they do 60s-70s stylistic experiments (which also presage the one guy’s work producing/writing Puffy’s early music), where even the production is pretty authentic but I also can’t tell if they’re being serious. Then when they sound like they’re trying to be serious it can be awful (some of their biggest hits are all but unlistenable, drowning in like strings and horns and stuff). On top of that they started out as a fairly straightforward Boþwy inspired band (and imo a bad one) and even later, that vibe still comes out at the most unexpected times. Also sometimes they actually mess around on purpose with like drum machines and samplers and stuff. There’s like no cohesion whatsoever.

Anyways I finally listened to their 1990 album for the first time and this song (which I can’t stop listening to) illustrates what I’m talking about pretty well. The production/arrangement on most of the song is super clean 90s style (if anything sort of ahead of its time?) but when they get to the bridge they flip on the reverb and it sounds like a pc engine cd rpg cutscene
but they also cut off the phrase early which makes it sound like they are just messing around after all

Don’t want to harsh your vibe at all but just in case you don’t know where the sample is from:

This is one of those cases where I think the song you posted heavily relies on the sample and is basically a straight downgrade. This is one of the all time greats

oh no vibe totally not harshed i like that Soda City Funk because it is a Cheryl Lynn/C+C Music Factory mashup w/ sick animation

This was the backing track to a skit me and a bunch of classmates did in like the 6th grade, I never heard it again until it showed up on youtube randomly like last year.

Can’t get over “3 acre floor” on that single being a laid back meditative rendition of “raincoat’s room” with people chatting in the background. “raincoat’s room” is the sky opening up after a fast drive in the rain on a gravelly road of guitar fuzz
