there is functionally no reason to play ggxx in 2025, nevermind the PS2 version, but it is my most played fighting game on the system and it is great. you would similarly never play the PS2 version of DOJ in current year, but it was easier for me to emulate than the arcade version for some reason and it is a really good port (of only white label, regrettably) of one of the greatest games ever made. it’s the one game on this list that I’ve never actually played on a real ps2

I guess I should finally try god hand one of these days

there’s still a couple PS2 games that i’ve been meaning to play like Way of the Samurai, Disaster Report and the og Yakuza for that weird english dub

if i make another list it’ll be my Personal, More Recent 10 PS2 games, now that i’m pushin 40

Personal 10, not best 10 so like why not include stuff I think about all the time but haven’t had a chance to finish? Why not.

  1. MGS3 (and knuckles, (knuckles is Ocelot))
  2. Granturismo 4(ever)
  3. Tokyo Extreme Racer Drift: 2 (I dont know that this game has an end exactly)
  4. Trapt (Tecmo’s Deception series, have like 98% of all the unlockable stuff)
  5. Dragon Quest 8 (still my fave DQ, rip slime con)
  6. Echo Night: Beyond (emulator cant handle the shadows effects)
  7. God Hand (need to start over but learn now to dodge properly)
  8. Michigan: Report from Hell (play stopped due to random freezeup)
  9. Shin Megami Tensei Devil Summoner 2 (recently restarted, sold the original with the box+plush for too much)
  10. Disaster Report

I’m not up to date, is this better than running games from USB stick?

The memcard slot is faster than the USB ports on a ps2. So probably!

but Killzone 1 sucked before. so what made you think we wanted more?

I missed out on this the first go around, but immediately searched to see who proved they have high intelligence and boatloads of charm by listing Unlimited Saga. Tuxedo and Tegiminis, congratulations you’re the winners! Rudie with the only Minstrel Song pick I guess gets half credit (man I played the remaster last year and it was wrecking me though, that’s definitely a SaGa game)

Me:
Final Fantasy XI
Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike
Dodonpachi Daioujou
Devil May Cry
Zone of the Enders
Onimusha (it’s a crime nobody listed this series and I’m tempted to add the Jean Reno one too)
Neo Contra (I think this was my GOTY 2004)
Unlimited Saga
Shinobi
Gran Turismo 3

Rudie do you know if you can load PS1 iso’s on a PS2 on this thing? Neither my PS1 or PS2 can read discs anymore so it’d be nice to have an all-in-one solution.

The way PS1 works on PS2 is it cuts off all access to PS2 features so it wouldn’t work.

Contradictory there is way but it has very low compatiblity and you shouldn’t bother.

Don’t remember if I’ve posted in here yet

Metal Gear Solid 2
Beatmania IIDX
Gran Turismo 3
Grand Theft Auto: Vice City
Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike
GOD HAND
Zone of the Enders: The 2nd Runner
Amplitude
Katamari Damacy

Silent Hill 2 and 4, Shadow of the Colossus, and some Final Fantasy games would be competing for places here if I’d played more of them. Drakengard would never be on here even though it means much more to me than most of this. Metal Gear Solid 3 meant a lot to me at the time but doesn’t mean much to me now. I also played a lot of Tony Hawk 4 but it’s nothing to me now. I wish Armored Core 2 were on here but I got hard filtered by it and continue to get hard filtered by it to this day.

@swarm

re: POPStarter

many games do work - i played a bunch of King’s Field II and don’t recall any issues at all. there are some relatively recent improvements being made to compatibility via patches so more games work now. i wouldn’t write POPStarter off entirely before glancing at the compatibility lists at least

It’s so wild to emulate PS1 on a system that includes a native PS1, but yeah, that’s the only option with those loaders and it works fairly well!
