Yeehaw pardner (cowboy games that aren't red dead redemption)

I really like cowboys, but I haven’t actually played as many cowboy games as I’d like. Notably I’m not actually that interested in playing RDD (probably should do it someday though), but I’ve played a couple others I liked.

Rail Heist

The most recent cowboy game I’ve indulged and the reason I thought to make this thread. One of two cowboy games contained within UFO 50 and certainly the best of the two (though I do like Grimstone). A puzzle platformer of sorts about good ol fashion train robberies. There’s lots of ways to approach each level and you’re rewarded for both killing all the lawmen on the train and also not killing any of them which I think is interesting cause most games usually only reward non-lethal play. I’ve seen people jokingly call this one an immersive sim which I can see, but it definitely feels more tongue and cheek than a genuine evaluation. Really like this game though and it’s very cowboy so a good place to start here.

Call of Juarez: Gunslinger

Now I don’t know anything about the rest of the Call of Juarez franchise, but what I do know is that this game rules. It’s got all the classic cowboy guns in it and they all sound and feel fantastic. It oozes with style in its presentation. The whole game is told as a bar story from a somewhat unreliable narrator and also has a lot of fun little actual history tidbits in it as collectibles. Probably one of the best cowboy shooters out there for me money.

Gunple: Gunman’s Proof

Very silly little game that I can best describe as cowboy Link to the Past. I wouldn’t say that’s like a super standout game gameplay wise, but it’s pretty fun and honestly I’m not that on Zelda and Zelda-adjacent games and much prefer this one to a lot of those offers. All the sprite work is great and I had a lot of the music stuck in my head after playing. I’d recommend it if you want something short and cute.

Dead Man’s Hand

This game is not actually particularly good or really that notable, but it’s one of the cowboy games I have played so I’m gonna mention it anyways. The PC port of it is abandonware which is how I learned about it and it’s super jank and took me like 2 hours to get working properly. It’s built in what I feel is a very awkward way cause stuff pops up like it’s a rail shooter and you move super slow, but you walk around wherever you want like a regular FPS. There’s no checkpoints or saving in levels so if you die you have to do it all over which lends to the rail shooter feeling. I would not recommend playing this, but I’m also the exact sorta of person who plays things regardless of recommendations so take that as you will.

Additionally here’s some cowboy games I want to play, but haven’t yet.

Westerado

Really like the art style and seems like it’s got a lot going

Boot Hill Heroes

It’s a cowboy RPG which is a perfect match for my tastes

12 is Better Than 6

Looks like a cowboy Hotline Miami

Sunset Devils

It’s not out yet, but it looks incredible and I will be buying day one

These are not all the cowboy games I know and I might be blanking on some notable ones I’ve played, but this is what came first. What are some cowboy games or games featuring cowboys that you’d recommend? I’d especially like to hear about lesser known ones regardless of quality, but even more so if they’re good.

I knew I was forgetting something! I have indeed played Wild Arms. Great game kinda bland combat though, but still a good time

wild arms shares a title word with wild guns

sunset riders is the most obvious one i think

and if not sunset riders, then gun.smoke (or gan sumoku as it’s now known, thanks to copyright nonsense)

also, express raider is really good, and probably the inspiration for rail heist

oh! and just before i clicked reply, i remembered the wild west

There’s gotta be some light gun cowboy games

I really dropped the ball. I also forgot about Sunset Riders. I played the arcade archives version, but a restaurant near me used to have a cabinet of it and I think playing it on that adds a lot to the experience, but that’s probably a given for most arcade games.

there is! oddly, all the ones i can think of come from the 90s digitisation craze

the mega cd version of lethal enforcers 2 has really cool boxart. also, imagine the little spoilt bastard who had a megacd AND a pair of justifiers

Gun by Neversoft, who made the Tony Hawk games, was an early attempt at an open world western in 2005. Not a half bad one, either, as I recall.

Outlaws, fantastic fps from Lucasarts at the height of their powers, starring spider ape Abe Lincoln

Wow ok I guess this is just what happens when you’ve beat like 300+ games. I love Outlaws that game rules I really should have put it on my initial post

was c.o.w.-boys of moo mesa any good? it was a beat-em-up, so it’s impossible to say

I’ve heard that it’s fine. Kind of an easier sunset riders. I’ve never seen the show for it, but I have a handful of the action figures

The Western levels in Timesplitters 2 I have fond memories of:

I liked blending old and new weapons in multiplayer as well.

The totally forgotten Rising Zan: The Samurai Gunman, a sort of proto-Devil May Cry and a game I only remember because I was obsessed with Tenchu and always on the lookout for anything similar. It is significantly worse than anything I just compared it to.

This is one I actually wanna play at some point, but it doesn’t look good enough for how much a copy of it costs to justify picking it up

Holy shit lol. This was a Gamestop trade-in within a month of purchase for me.

I will say that for the time it was funny and also sort of prefigured No More Heroes.

I certainly wouldn’t use a graded copy as a measure of what it’s actually running at, but yeah it’s not exactly ideal even for someone like me who doesn’t actually have much issue with spending $200+ on some old rare games

we found a copy of this 2 years ago for three dollars in the case just sitting outside at San Pablo flea market in perfect condition in a pile of trash. may you encounter the same luck

I’ve been collecting games since I was 13 and this sort of luck has never happened to me. I always see those post where people are like “LOOK AT THIS CRAZY DEAL I GOT” and it’s like the entire SNES library for $10 and I’m sitting here thinking “it’s pretty good my copy of God Hand was only $140”
