Yeehaw pardner (cowboy games that aren't red dead redemption)

Since I realized I overlooked a bunch of obvious ones I should have listed here’s a short list of a few more off my spreadsheet. Both things I’ve played and things I want to play.

Steamworld Dig

I’ll take any chance I get to talk about the Steamworld games they’re all great

Gunman Clive

Very quaint platformers that make for great games to go through in an afternoon

Dillon’s Rolling Western

It’s one of them tower defenses where you walk around and fight the enemies yourself. I like the look of the touch screen based stuff

Borderlands 3: Bounty of Blood

I know Borderlands isn’t particularly well loved, but I’ve always been a big fan and while 3 isn’t my favorite I loved the vibes of this DLC.

Gumby vs. the Astrobots

The first set of levels is western themed. I have nothing else of note to say about this game.

Gotta show some love for the original NES Wild Gunmen, and also Exidy’s Cheyenne, where you have to defend a bumbling sheriff from assorted outlaws

Oh that reminds me of this one. I always wanted a copy of this, but I guess I could load it on a flash cart

the Desperados games own. I like that they’re stealth tactics games because it would suck to get shot in cowboy times

A bullet grazes you and within a few hours both your legs fall off

There’s a western chapter in Live a Live

Challenger for the famicom and Magic Wand both came to mind even though I’m pretty sure you play as an archaeologist and some sort of aged capsule toy collector in each, respectively. Both have immaculate cowboy vibes though:

This game looks so up my alley and I keep meaning to get to it. There’s also a samurai part in it right? Samurais and cowboys are equals on the coolness scale

Speaking of Samurais and Cowboys

I love this absurd game and its parry/dodge mechanics. Minigun enemies being able to erase your entire health bar at once sounds bad until you get the timing on the parry. Then you can return their entire bullet stream back into them and vaporize them. Plus it has the same costume/accessory system as Way of the Samurai, so you can dress yourself up as any character in the game, with a 400% larger hat, if you want. Universal model replacement ought to be a feature in every game by now.

2bears had a game years ago you might enjoy if you can find it then. Sixgun Samurai, it was a walking shoot game like ikari warriors except you only have six bullets and need to cut enemy bullets out of the air to refill your ammo. He never completed it but it was a decent couple stages

No samurai but there’s a ninja.

Cowboy, ninja, kung-fu master, prehistoric man, robot on a spaceship, wrestling guy, Neo-tokyo psychic, and secret 8th character

Colt Canyon is a fun cowboy roguelike.

It’s a little too stingy on ammo for my taste though.
