i just learned about Opoona today and it sounds remarkable, why have we never talked about it??

Planning director Sachiko Sugimura desired to “express that every single person means something and that the world grows and changes in accordance with the loving relationships among all people, instead of depicting the main character only as a special existence.”[5]

The team designed the game so that it may be played with the Wii Remote Nunchuk attachment alone because of its limited control input that allows the player to casually play the game one-handed while relaxing or eating.

Art director Shintaro Majima stated that he was first inspired to create Opoona after waking from a nap, taking a bath, and drawing his first design on the bathroom mirror.[4][5] The main characters were meant to be simple enough that they could be easily redrawn by children; enemies were designed as non-living objects to make them distinct.[4] Majima’s personal interest in modern architecture and industrial design were the driving force behind the visual style of Opoona and that the Wii’s “clean” and “something new” style overlapped the game’s image. Majima’s brother Tatuso, a modern artist, planned the locations and landscapes using what he considered to be the most attractive blend of reality and imagination.[5]

i’m really eager to spark conversation about the wii, especially considering the consoles are extremely cheap and omnipresent, they are easily moddable, and their soft-mod emulation/simulation chops are immense, including nigh-perfect support for everything up to and including 16-bit consoles (with uniquely great light-gun control solutions) and backup support for gamecube games from USB

I fuckin’ loved Boom Blox maybe some of the most funny I had with motion controls on the last console generation.

Ghost Squad is the best fucking game on the system and I will stab anyone in the throat with a banana who dare disagrees

There’s defos an Opoona fan or two here. I remember posting some quotes in the wiki…

Smartblue: Overlooked RPG with a wonderful rich world. Complete with museums and fictional art history periods, a fun job searching bureaucratic society to dig into, and a mind blowing soundtrack by Hitoshi Sakamoto.

Smartblue: I am the guy who always comes into Wii threads to talk about how great Opoona is. You should try to find Opoona somewhere because it is the most charming RPG because because because:

  1. Graphics and art style like a cross between PSO and Bumpy Trot.
  2. Music done by Basiscape.
  3. Play as a fat kid with a ball hovering over his head who either frowns when he runs or rides a hover board that makes noises like Magneto’s car in those old cartoons.
  4. Unlike the rest of the game, battles all have music that sounds like it came out of Dragon Quest.
  5. You can watch TV shows that are all goofy at any time from your pause menu.
  6. There are art installations all over the place, each with a plaque explaining who created it, when and what fictional art movement it was inspired by. These range from empty picture frames out in the combat areas that frame up on something cool, to giant neck ties attached to windmills, from a rainbow of televisions showing test patterns to a robot endlessly walking on a giant globe floating on water.

TORUMASUTA: There’s only one planet, but Opoona is…a ride. It’s likely the first, and only, Wii RPG to take place in an idealized utopian communist police state. You’re a kid astronaut and that’s about the only thing in that game that makes sense. There’s…no easy way to describe it, but worth picking up cheap.

I avoided Castlevania Judgement forever because of all the harsh e-words, but it’s good times. I’m vouching for it as a pleasant diversion, not as a FGC hidden gem though. It occupied a weird space between Soul Blade and Powerstone.

Final boss Dracula is mega cheap.

It’s Wii Sports Resort.

Yeah I’m an opoona fan. I came to it after the wii was basically dead so never had much chance to talk about it. I played it pretty much because of that description on the sb wiki.

This description of Opoona, which I’ve never heard of before, is literally the only thing that’s ever made me want a Wii.

Cubello I rinsed to death, good remoteware

Yeah! I get to say that Reginleiv is EDF but melee based and motion controls and sucks.

I owned Disaster but couldn’t get it to boot on my modded wii.

Pandora’s Tower is a weird weird weird game.

People that can actually adjust to Wii FPS controls probably don’t play FPS games.

Had some chill, stoned-late-at-night times with Endless Ocean, too.

And plays terribly. Astonishingly so. Like a really bad Simple 2000 game. I should give it another try at some point.

It’s my favorite Wii game and my favorite single-player EDF game but I have shit taste so you might have a point.

wiiware games have been added. jett rocket is a pretty neat casual platformer. bonsai barber is a weird haircutting (er, plant-trimming) game. the art style games are really cool. i dig all of the rebirth games. you, me, and the cubes is a stunner, and probably the best wiiware title if you ask me

Escape from Bug Island is a fun time, and Pandora’s Tower is pretty cool too. It gets a lot of boss mileage out of pulling on things.

I’ve always thought this looked super interesting so it’s a shame I keep hearing the English translation is really lackluster and mechanical. I’d still love to play it though.

Don’t Worry Captain Rainbow is really nothing. It is talking to RPG Town NPCs the game.
