What's the best 8-bit vertically-scrolling shooter

  • Summer Carnival '92: Recca
  • Gun*Nac
  • Crisis Force
  • GG Aleste 1
  • GG Aleste 3
  • Any other 8-bit Compile shooter (GUARDIAN LEGEND DOESN’T COUNT)

Feel like there’s no consensus on this.

I think it’s pretty clear GG Aleste 1 is way better than 2. The “other compile” option was for weirdos who might like aleste 1/zanac 1/msx games and they can go together bc they need a handicap. but then I learned some people really like power strike 2 for the master system. They are probably just europeans though. then I remembered GG aleste 3 is techncially an M2 game so that needs a separate option.

Also I’ve decided pc engine doesn’t count in this thread lol.

Formative gaming bias might be clouding my judgment here, but Zanac NES is totally my pick. Though admittedly it’s a long as hell game.

definitely gg aleste 1 for me.

does arcade stuff like 1942 / exed exes count? Z80 hardware, so definitely 8-bit

raiden (1990) is using a V30 (16-bit) so for sure this would still be limited to earlier 80s stuff like xevious, etc. fair game or are we looking at console/handheld only?

edit: still pondering but off top, if the latter then i might just have to go zanac NES, though i am also one of those perverts who likes Power Strike 2 the best of the GG Aleste-associated games

Sure they just didn’t meet the cut for my nominations lol. I considered tiger heli as well

I’m a basic babe who didn’t even know there was a consensus between GG Aleste 1 and 2. I just assumed GGA2 was better because I like the music more and it’s pleasant enough to play.

Also this category is about forcing more modern shooting game design onto weaker hardware. I feel like it’s often overlooked bc it’s easier to pick a contemporary arcade shooting game over one of these. But these have their own charms.

My personal favorite is Silpheed, mainly for aesthetic reasons. It has a custom 2.5D engine where especially complex objects get painted onto the screen vector by vector

Soon after your ship launches, this giant face materializes and threatens you with doom

I picked GG Aleste 3 even though I haven’t played it. I’m just making a calculated assumption.

Also find it funny that you didn’t include any of Hudson’s early Caravan games. They aren’t that nad but I don’t see anyone picking them over something else.

I really enjoy GGA2 a lot, though I haven’t 1cced it yet. I totally 1cced GGA1 and it’s a pretty great game. GGA3 is also really good.l, though

Also the room for GGA3 is out there and playable now, so people can play that and see.

Gonna vote for 3, though secretly 2 is really good.

Are all the “other” votes for zanac NES? That’s cool as hell, I like that game.

Honestly it was a toss up for me between gunnac and gg aleste.

I thought gg aleste 3 might have had a strong showing but I guess very few people have actually played it. Hopefully that changes soon now that it’s been dumped. It’s pretty good!

Re: recca I thought it was probably gonna win, as I’ve said before I’m just not a fan of nes/famicom games that have too much going on, I like nes games that stay in their lane.

Really what this thread was about was making sure no one favors crisis force. That game was a big early 2010’s blog “best famicom shooting game? 10/10” Seriously Konami had a lot of resources to keep making games for old hardware & make them technically impressive, that doesn’t mean they were able to make them fun or interesting (see: contra force, lagrange point). A thought I had while stoned was “damn…Konami gentrified the NES”

I mean I’m being a little harsh bringing up contra force. Crisis force is cute and fine for what it is

Not well versed enough to have a real opinion here but I immediately just thought TwinBee because it’s the first thing I think of for “8 bit vertical shooter”

I’m one of those Zanac folks. I also like GG Aleste 1 and I could see that being the best, but only if played with the option provided in m2’s Aleste Collection to increase the invincibility time after item pickups. Then you can basically play it like Zanac!

I wholeheartedly endorse this topic’s conceit by the way. Compile rules, especially 8bit Compile.

Today I learned arcade twinbee & gradius run on a 16-bit cpu (the 68000)

Whoa posting on a phone and had the wrong thread open.

Wanted to pick Recca for the banging impossible-with-no-external-soundchip hard techno ost and that it pushes out so many sprites that you get a manic flickering mess, but I remember enjoying myself more with the compile titles on the list. Picked GG Aleste 3 bc i actually managed to 1cc it….though it was probably on one of the easier modes included on the M2 retail game

Oh hey, if Wonderswan Color counts, Judgement Silversword rules.

Oh yeah, ZAS and Aerostar for that matter

You know, I’ve been playing a couple of Famicom shooters, enjoying them a lot more than I expected, and I think I have to change my answer to some kind of Twinbee. Moero Twinbee for now since I want to imagine that three player is really fun.
