My favorite since I was 4 years old is 1943 for NES. Level-Up System, secrets, way too many stages.

Zanac is probably the icon of the genre since NES twinbee is unreadable with colorblindness so i can’t play it, but I’m more likely to go back to Gun.Smoke.
I went through the list t lemon64 to see if any Commodore games might be worth bringing into this thread, but lol no.

I’m partial to Life Force, I guess, unless it’s disqualified by having some horizontal stages.

NES Dragon Spirit is good, too. (Better than any other version, in my opinion.)

Well, there’s Bulldog.

Edit: Wait, is arcade Xevious 8-bit? if so, it has my vote.
