what megaman game should i play first

I was always super disappointed because design-wise I liked the broom idea from Powered Up (although I don’t like Powered up itself) but I wished they’d given her a full array of broom powers from defeating bosses.

Ooh, I like the use of Roll’s Marvel Vs. Capcom theme for the Stage Select screen! Or does that theme precede that game?

Surprise surprise, it’s actually from Mega Man Battle & Chase, the racing game spinoff!

Thanks for reminding me this exists:

I love the happy expression she has when running. Supposedly the 2016 android port was based on the 2008 mobile version, but they made Roll inaccessible.

Anyhow, funny coincidence with this talk about Roll, but a new update for that Mega Man Maker fangame thing just came out a couple days ago and I guess she’s playable now:

(Haven’t touched it since it first came out, though I’m tempted to return.)

That looks really fucking cool. I wish they got a pixel artist to make original art for them, tho. At least Capcom isn’t as litigous as other entities, but like, oof

Whoa, Roll’s moveset is really interesting! That’s really well thought out and made! Incredible.

I just realized I could finally play my dream MM1 but with later MM physics game! I wonder if anyone’s remade the entirety of MM1 yet

Baten Kaitos music huh?

Bumping this thread to ask what people think about Megaman ZX. I’ve been in the mood for a metroidvania x Megaman game and I never played the ZX games prior + they’re on sale on Switch right now. What does everyone think about the series? Any highlights? Downsides?

All I know about is that it stars new characters that wear reference powers of prior characters? At the time I didn’t like it/didn’t play it because it seemed too much like a Kamen Rider gimmick. Are they any good?

they’re ok but they have a weirdly different feel from MMX that makes it a little disorienting to me. other than aesthetically it doesn’t really feel like mega man, which… i guess could be good if you are sick of that formula. the first one at least has like a hub world thing that gets kind of tiresome, weird feature for a 2d game

The map in ZX was monumentally bad.

This is my only memory of it.

Like worse than Dawn of Sorrow bad???

That’s because it is! Like, if the classic series is Astro boy and Legends is Yatterman and X is Casshern or something, ZX is definitely Kamen Rider, with Mega Man (or Rockman) actually being used as a generic term for good and evil “riders” alike. And so yeah, the gimmick is you get collectible rider-gadgets-of-the-season that allow you to use the power sets of past mega people (which includes the four guardians from Zero). In ZXA this extends to turning into the less humanoid bosses, which can be nifty on occasions because one of them pretty much plays like Firebrand (and one of them is some kind of crustacean who is just a big immobile useless lump out of water). I guess gameplay-wise the reference would be MM Zero rather than X, they’re pretty much Zero sequels, only quite a bit less mean to the player.

This extends to the story, which is directly related to MM Zero 4’s, so if you care about deep super fighting robot lore I advise you play the Zero games (or at least Zero 4) before ZX and ZXA. A big personal frustration, though, is that much like Legends 2 ZXA ends on a clear cliffhanger which was never resolved.

Giant nondescript squares in a game with pressing up to enter different areas.

yeah even as someone who likes the Mega Man series an unreasonable amount, i couldn’t really get into the ZX series when it came out. i remember ZX Advent being slightly better, but i still fell off pretty quick.

every time the Zero/ZX collection goes on sale, i do consider picking it up to give them another shot, but generally i think the Zero series is probably better

Maybe I’ll skip the collection then. Thanks for everyone’s info!
