I haven’t really followed any Mega Man or Megaman-adjacent news since Legends 3 was canned, so it was only a few nights ago while I was tossing and turning restlessly that it finally dawned on me that Red Ash (Wikipedia, official site) was called that because it was meant to be a a RE??? of DASH.

If you want to know what it’s all about, play 2

If you’re afraid of 2 being too hard but you still want an NES experience out of it, play 6

If you just want an accessible experience but that isn’t necessarily representative of the whole franchise, and if you like really pretty pixel-art, play 8

If you think armors and energy tanks are cool, play X, then X4

If you think Zero is cool and you wanna tear robots in half and watch blood gush out of their bodies, or if you played X4 and think Zero is more fun to play than X, play Zero 3

If all you like from those games are the boss battles play Megaman The Power Fighters

If you like SEGA-CD FMV games play Super Adventure Rockman

My favorites for the record are 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, X1, X4 and Zero 3 though I haven’t played them all

Also I think there’s no shame in playing them with savestates imo. I think all the games should just refill your weapon energy every time you die, these games are way more fun when you play around with your weapons thru the levels. I also dislike the power creep that the series went through in giving you E-Cans, E-Tanks, armor pieces. It gets hard to judge what the ideal difficulty and difficulty curve is. I also agree with the criticism of the level select, but only a little bit. I think some games’ (like 8) solution to have an opening stage, then 4 levels + 4 levels is great, it has that same appeal of choice and figuring it out on your own without being overwhelming or there being ā€œwrongā€ (hard levels) or ā€œrightā€ (easy levels) choices like it often feels like there are in so many of these games

Anyway this is all why 8 would be the ideal Megaman game if it had more classic platforming and shooting action instead of JUMP JUMP SLIDE SLIDE and other gimmicky stuff. I love that they replace E-Cans with stuff to get shop upgrades from, and I love that they use the 4+4 structure to have the later 4 levels require you to use the first 4 levels’ weapons, very smart stuff

Strong first post, welcome

curious about this–i played a ton of x1 and x2 in the past and somewhat more recently played through all of the x’s up to 5, and found 4 to be pretty forgettable? what did i miss?

ty, I’ve been here in the first SB but decided to join in SB2 only now

X4 I think is probably be the lowest of the bunch that I listed? I was even reticent on whether I should leave it in, but the graphics are pretty, the music is good, and I do feel some nostalgia for it. Plus it legitimately tries to move things forward in the X series in a few ways that I appreciate. It’s not one of the best ones I listed but it certainly is miles better than the X games that follow after it, and X2 and X3 make me feel like I should just be playing X1 instead.

X4 is really good with Zero, and okay with X.
It has good music, good graphics, and animated cut-scenes.

Being able to bring a ride-armor to a boss fight is the greatest secret since the X1 environment changes.

On that note, it does a good job of giving you what you want. The biggest most obvious example being playable Zero for the entire game. I like the way Zero is handled. Expanding his sword move-set with the defeat of each boss was an inspired choice.

some kind words for meganman 2 for gmaeboy:

this is what happens when you get hit climbing a ladder
mm2gb ladder
i love it.

people should hack that in to some other mega man games imo. call it ā€œchill ladders modeā€ or something.

the soundtrack is entirely original. a lot of people don’t like it, but imo wood man’s theme is a particular standout:

i love it.

also, there’s a part in the boss theme that sounds like glitch music (at 0:23)

i love it.

in conclusion, all mega mens are good

How are ZX and ZX Advent? I hear those are more Metroidvania in design.

This is the first Megaman title I owned and was able to eventually clear; if I can do it anyone can

Well, ZERO; as it was labeled, was statistically - interesting; actual thought goes into the weaknesses… ā€˜and Bassā€˜ was SNES - Rockman and Forte…

I beat it like 55 times, at the least…

edit: it was my 1st Megaman (sadly enough…)

though for an upgrade, like five years later, I shelled out like 100 bucks for
Rockman V (GB), the Japan cut…

Growing up, my fav Megaman was 3 because I was a fool, with a few years thinking MMV for GB was the best (it’s dang good for a GB game), but after college when I went through the games in order, my favorite was and has been 1 for how different it is to the rest of the series in terms of level design and boss rush design.

If there was a hack that gave 1 the gravity of the rest of the series, I think it’d be the best.

My favorites go: MM1 > MM9 > MM2

Overall MM-wise though, I go: MM1 > Tron Bonne > MML1 > MML2 > MMBN1-3 > rest of the series

The first mega man I played was 1 on a flip phone lol

9 is still my favorite. It introduced me to the idea of speed running, tracking the world records and seeing the layers of possibility space as the routes evolved left an impression on me.

Oh mannn, I played that flip phone one too! Didn’t it have Roll as a playable character? I remember working my way through it even though it wasn’t great to play.

Tangent: I remember the Sonic 1 port for flip phones was an even bigger mess though. On my phone, it played like a slideshow and strategy game because I had to buffer my inputs several seconds ahead to maneuver around safely. Labyrinth Zone with the underwater slowdown on top of the already existing 1 fps shutter speed was hell. Good times.

What!?

Wow, I had no idea, I wonder how you unlocked her? The music and sound effects are very familiar. I vaguely remember Mega Manā€˜s chin not having an outline on my mom’s phone.

Oh wow, I don’t remember that custom sprite or title screen at all! It’s so cute! I wonder if there’s rip of it yet. Or hacks to put that in the original game (probably won’t work with the palette limit though).

I do remember it playing her theme song at boss select though. Weird that she doesn’t gain enemy powers - how does she get through Wily 1-1 then? I clearly remember her having ice beam to freeze the fire pillars though.

OHH SHE JUST HAS A REALLY HIGH JUMP to jump past the fire pillars. Does she get the platform beam then? Probably not?

Wow, she really is Easy Mode, huh?
