beta and support issues aside, that’s probably never gonna be great, via a single USB cable.
We wanna play Beat Saber here in garyhome
We have a PS4 and a PC that could run VR
We do not really have open floor space, but could make more by moving tables around
What should I get?
Renter’s insurance, if you don’t already have it
rimshot
A used Rift will run about $200 these days. A new Rift S is $399.
There’s also the Samsung Odyssey Plus Windows MR headset for $250 with a gift card.
Everything works with SteamVR openly, and there are hacks to get Oculus software on another headset, so at least on the PC there isn’t a lot of incompatibility.
The Oculus controllers are much nicer than the Vive wands, Windows MR controllers, or PS move wands imo. They’re very comfortable and do some limited finger/hand tracking.
The Windows headsets and new Oculus headsets (Rift S on) use “inside-out” tracking so you don’t have to place sensors or have a dedicated space. I’d go with the Samsung above or the Rift S for that reason.
PSVR is very unfussy and has more good exclusives than anyone else and is not Facebook hardware in your house but if you have a good enough computer already you should seriously consider getting the Samsung odyssey thing, because PSVR is kind of low resolution and the move controllers are pretty bad
In general it’s the easiest to recommend though
yeah i was gonna ask if PSVR resolution is any better with a Pro coz i am definitely not getting a gaming PC at any time in the foreseeable but the contrast between the Index downstairs and the PSVR upstairs was a little distressing
not much tbh
it will probably be better on PS5 though that would entail a whole new headset because part of the issue is that PSVR is only 1080p and the PC headsets are all at least 1440p (though a lot of PSVR games render below the 1080p screen right now anyway)
ah fuck it i’ll just keep an eye out for one on sale
There’s some debate going on about whether or not Alyx should/should not have arms, in HL:Alyx.
I think Valve should have a new HEV suit which makes your arms disappear and have a character talk about it. And before you (she) put it on, you have arms.
It’s important to note that for beatsaber if you get the PSVR version you won’t get to play any custom songs (technically you can hack the game for this but it’s an awful lot of work) or have access to any of the mods. And the game is honestly pretty barebones without any user generated content.
is there a VR game where arms are modeled and it doesn’t look horribly weird? every one I’ve seen that tries to do this creates this weird marionette effect that to me is deeply unsettling, like you’re controlling a silent hill monster with fucked up backwards joints.
I honestly think the floating hands approach is a more elegant solution until someone can find a way to do it that looks/feels natural.
that or silent hill VR
Not one with hand tracking/motion controls.
The fake body in Eve Valkyrie is good enough but it’s not mapped to you.
There are folks putting additional Vive trackers on their elbows and knees to make VRChat or other puppeteering more natural and capture dancing, so it’s not far off, but the software needs more points to track to make joint movements look natural.
yeah it seems like it’d be basically impossible without additional tracking beyond your hands
I guess maybe you could train an AI or something?
A really good rig with inverse kinematics can make it look alright in video, but it won’t necessarily be solving your arm movement the way you, yourself are, so it’ll be more immersion-breaking than helpful.
I read this and immediately wanted Octodad in VR to be a thing
does the hmd odyssey plus consider glasses? the acer headset i got for cheap ($150 as opposed to $300) doesn’t (i think? i still don’t have a VR ready machine but i tried it on and it does not feel comfortable at all) and since i haven’t used it at all i’m thinking about selling it and getting the odyssey plus or hoping the rift s goes on sale soon???
the lenovo explorer doesn’t (but disposable contacts are actually very cheap) so I would imagine the WMR headsets mostly don’t
Another route to consider is ordering lenses:

Looks like they don’t cover the Acer headset. I’m happy with the ones I got for the Index.
that’s a great point
honestly it might be better spending the money on an eye checkup too instead of another fancy thing
