videogame things you think about a lot

i started playing shenmue iii, and i think maybe the most important ingredient of a good-looking game is the colour palette

i think a lot about how my littlest brother (11…?) started making the mario 64 long fall noise when encountering any minor inconvenience. like he’d drop a chip or something and look down and quietly say “waAaAaAaAahhh”. i don’t think he’s ever played that game.

this reminds me of how i (and other people i knew) used to imitate the Wolf 3D “YEAH!” victory jump as kids

there were probably people who bought an n64 because they were anime fans, and the snes was the anime console of the early 90s, and they assumed that that would continue to be the case for nintendo’s next console.
most would probably have just traded it in for a playstation or a saturn eventually, but there were probably a few who stuck it out, living on desperate rations of evangelion and pokemon snap

I wonder which consoles can be considered anime consoles & which are just the most popular to release any sort of licensed game on like the sfc. I do think there is kind of a cd-rom fmv/voice aspect to anime games that people were probably ready to switch to psx/saturn right off the bat. and they had like a year and a half to decide. Just saying I think about this kind of stuff too lol

I dunno if it’d be anime in general, but the casio loopy is absolutely the sailor moon console

the pcfx was specifically intended to be an anime console, with a regular disc magazine of anime trailers and voice actor interviews and such.

then they forgot to release actual games on it, oops

Sort of unrelated but in my head, sailor moon was really into her pc engine, then as a hardcore gamer decided to get a Japanese 3do or a pc-fx right when it came out, and pretty much stopped playing video games shortly after that without really understanding or pondering why she got bored.

The Dreamcast was the last non-handheld anime console, succeeded by only the Vita.

i always considered the vita the handheld hd dreamcast (because of the many many arcade ports you could officially play on it, between the ps1, psp, and native libraries), so that’s acceptable

They both use Hall effect sticks and PowerVR graphics too

Last night I got so mad when someone linked a YouTuber saying “you’d be surprised that the 360 had a shmup” and I was like NO you would NOT cuz if you were really hardcore you woulda known that Microsoft’s willingness to throw around money and Sony’s refusal to grant licenses to smaller Japanese devs meant all the good Japanese HD Era games were on Xbox

Also those were almost the only good HD era games

Also the only good PS3 games were Spelunker HD and Demon’s Souls :sunglasses: so not all the good Japanese games but close enough close enough

still haunted by the “Links” page for world’s first gamer webcomic, Polymer City Chronicles. interesting in reading more about videogames on the net? here’s a little gamer’s tip for you: why not take a trip to xbox dot com.

the comic itself defies description but i will say that the penny arcade format of two little nerd guys make jokes about videogames turns out to have been a significant step downwards from having a single little nerd guy make jokes about videogames while his enormously buff amazonian wife constantly tries to drag him off panel to have sex with. also all the strips have titles like “half-wife” and in the FAQs he talks about how his sense of colour theory is mostly influenced by Unreal Tournament. truly it was all downhill from here.

i ws just thinking the other about how bleak that era was. on the ps1, ps2, and dreamcast, i was constantly getting excited for new games. then with the xbox 360, it was a couple of times a year.
now with the ps4, i’ve got backlog of games to play and a backlog of games to buy

I’m pretty sure she’s usually depicted playing sega-like consoles in the show but my memory could be failing here

I always thought of sailor jupiter as the megadriver. Idk how to explain it though. She would quit videogames after that, except to play ff7 on a friend’s psx.

Sailor mercury is loaded, especially in the manga, so she would have her own pc-98. She would mostly use it for studying though, she’d only own 1 or 2 games. Definitely no horny games or robot games. JB Harold Murder Club & 46 Okunen Monogatari I would say.

Sailor mars would have a super famicom and play only the big name jrpgs like dragon quest & final fantasy, plus anime licensed games. and I think would have continued this trend into present day.

Sailor venus would have gotten an atari lynx when she lived in the UK and barely played it. Later she would have been suprised to see some lynx games being sold in japan but not cared enough to buy any.
